Can break 80ParticipantStroke at Warra yesterday.
Nett 34 out, nett 44 back. Damnit !
No 3-putts but only four 1-putts.course should be in good condition after Super 6 event in mid December.
BUT did you break 100 for the dayNo, I didn’t.
There’s a pro-am tomorrow, so the course is still in excellent condition.
No excuses except for the wind which affected putting more than anything else. I just kept hitting trees.I feel your pain. The strong easterly winds were a curse. the best that I could figure out was to curve it into the wind and allow the ball to straighten out in t. The par 5 #16 hole at our course runs West to East. With the wind blowing hard it is a par 6!
Are the easterly winds due to the annual upwelling which occurs along your coastline about this time of year.?
Can break 80ParticipantI played in the local Stableford comp this morning. The weather was cool and overcast with light winds, then it rained, then the wind strengthened from the South and it got a bit warmer at the end.
I played consistently average golf! 89 OTS.( 4pars, 11 bogeys and three doubles)
I hit 6/14 fairways, 8 GIR, 2 up and downs. The down side was 38 putts. Today it felt like there was a force field around the hole. Not just for me but we all struggled to drop them today. I got the long ones close, but anything within 8 m I missed.
I was consistently leaving the Driver face open at impact today. Not a lot ( no huge slices) but I rolled a tee shot into the trees on the right on hole #4 and had to punch out, then the same on Hole #9, and mishit the approach shot with my 6 Hybrid into the weeds left side. Or how to hit double bogeys.
Two steps
1) Driver distance has improved
2) short game accuracy was improvedOne Step back
1) This is a hard one to determine. My putter speed control was off today, leaving too many short from inside 8 m. But, my faded tee shots were initially a bit too far right start line wise and went too far right. I got it better as the game went on. My last tee shot was an attempted fade with my 4W. I turned it over and ended up 20 m wide of the green, left side. Oops!Like the quote “änything within 8m I missed”.
8 m is a long putt, and we should not be trying to get them, or more important dont be too disappointed if you dont get them..
. The best players in the world make 1/10 from over 20 ft (6m) so we should expect to 2 putt at best from that distanceThe putting stat to always look at is how many were you made inside 1m.

Can break 80Participantsaturday golf at Rich river west course
84 OTS consisted of 1 birdie, 9 pars, 3 bog 4 DB 1 +3.
27 putts was highlight of day, made a lot of good chip and put pars so good result = won a bottle of wineMoinday golf at Rich river east course
78 OTS 1 birdie 10 pars 6 bogeys 1 DB, 34 putts, great play today, DB came when I tried to play too aggressively up the last trying to shoot a score.
overall much better ball striking today,10 GIR and putting was very good and solid, so cannot always judge putting by how many for round, as t had lots of putts over 5 and 10m, so not realistic birdies, 1 x3 putt on long green where I hit edge.so over 2 days had 84 +78 = 162 and won 2 bottles of wine, my mate played well also and had 83 / 84 for 2 days.
next two days off because of heat. new course next week
Can break 80Participant41 putts today at the Wodonga mini golf.
doing a post game assessment.
1) didn’t allow for wind and thunder.
2) the ball used wasnt a premium tour ball so no back spin
3) poor reading of sloping surfaces.
4) stones and small twigs on the track made it easy to deflect ball off line
5) the side walls bounced ball more than I thought.onto to a real course on Friday at Yarrawonga provided no thunder and rain.

Can break 80ParticipantHey all.
About 3 years ago, I lost my pitching wedge at Peregian Springs (a Callaway RAZR X HL). Rang the club, they did have an RAZR pitching wedge handed in but it wasn’t mine (wasn’t a HL). Since then I have made do between 9 iron and sand wedge, and I wasn’t playing much anyway. Now I am trying to play a bit more so was hoping to fill the gap.
Just wondering if anyone has a forgiving pitching wedge (Approx 44 Degrees) that they aren’t super attached to, I would love to hear from you.Would also be interested in a 60-64 degree wedge if anyone wanted to part with one.
Cheers,
Toby
Rascal
your are saying want consistency
a 60 to 64 degree wedge is believe it or not more difficult to hit than a 56 or 58, especially if you dont practice a lot.
most golfers who cannot break 90 would be better to not carry a 60 deg, or if they do use it for limited number of shots , not all shots such as chips.2 users liked this post.
Can break 80ParticipantNoticed even the Australian PGA are now using phones for scoring in recent tournaments, at Vic PGA and Super 6 events, although noticed some old hand pro’s still keep score card as a cross check for the modern technology.
probably technology is OK for bigger clubs in city but its a trade off, as many smaller country clubs, who only have a comp on one day per week and 30 to 40 members in that comp, may not be able to justify the huge cost of going digital.

Can break 80ParticipantOK I agree with Hack2489 wrote to a point.
The point being the edge of the metro area, at which PGA professionals become a bit like hen’s teeth.
A newbie could ask local golfers for advice, if he/she knew any. In my limited experience, a lot of club golfers know not a lot about club selection. Most have forgotten what it was like to be a beginner. While I was buying some decent golf balls ( Inesis Tour 900 ) I noticed that they had a beginner’s set for sale. It had 7 clubs for $359.The set was:
1) Mini Driver 14 degree/ 42.5 ”
2) Hybrid 22 degree /39 ”
3) 6/7 iron 30 degree
4) 8/9 iron 39 degree
5) PW 45 degree
6) SW 56 degree
7) Mallet putter
Stand bag at $95.The one disappointment for me living in the sticks is that Decathlon won’t freight bigger items . Still that sort of set composition makes a lot of sense to me, in that there is nothing too hard to hit to frustrate a beginner.
One of the best practice rounds can have XRman is to play a few rounds with only 7 clubs and see what effect it has on scoring.
agree with set make up shown above.

Driver : Cleveland Launcher XL 12 degree arriving soon ( I will be able to adjust this one)
4 Wood: A 43.5 inch shaft on my Cobra 17 degree 5 Wood
7 Wood: TS2 ( like it)
19 Hybrid: Cobra F9 single length ( love it/ so many uses)
24 Hybrid : Cobra F7
29 Hybrid: TS2
7 iron to GW; Milford Golf SL-7 single length/ graphite shafts
Wedges: winter ( more bounce) Cleveland CBX2 56/60, Milford SL-7 56/60 for summer ( less bounce)
Putter: Wilson Staff Midway for slow greens. Gravity Golf Arcmaster for fast greens/ scrape courses.
Balls: Inesis Tour 900 until they raised the price $20/dozen after good reviews. Snell MTB-X Black.I have been mucking about with Drivers. I bought a Cleveland HB Turbo 12 degree and improved a lot in comparison to the Cobra F9. I also bought two Nike Vapor Speeds ( one regular flex, one A flex) I hit the A flex all over the place, but cut it down to 44 inches and found the fairway, but lost 10 m. I tried the F9 again after two years and boy had it improved!
Using an A flex over R flex may not result in more distance, as A bends shaft more meaning might be more difficult to return square, which you sort of found out by shortening the length.
think about the loft, higher loft easier to hit ball in air but goes higher and carry more through air, which is good in winter but maybe not so in Portland wind, lower loft might give more bounce and run on firm fairways in summer
so having a loft setting for summer vs winter makes total sense
you have different putters for fast and slow greens so different drivers for course type also makes sense.
at your course straighter is better than longer, whereas port fairy can afford to be a little off line.
keep experimenting, not flight data really can select the driver for you, its what you like.
Can break 80ParticipantIt must be summer! I had a pleasant bike ride around town in the sunshine and light Northerly wind. We have been waiting for such a day for months. The plan is to start ” Project T’ That is, work on documenting Tony’s club distances and see if we can work on a better Driver for him. Tony has a slow rhythmic swing and is using the same Driver that he has owned for 15 years. Being 72 now, he has lost a lot of distance off the tee. So far he has improved a lot with using a A flex 5-7 wood rather than his old 3 wood. He has also replaced his longer irons 5-7 with Cleveland Launcher (A flex graphite) , but still uses his older 8-SW with steel shafts.
Today we will play around with shaft flex and loft on the Driver to see what he can achieve.. It should be interesting.
Also look at the ball T uses, as this can give a bit more speed of club head and improve ball flight.
Srixon soft feels and Callaway supersofts and Bridgestone precept laddie are worth a try, all low compression
Can break 80Participantwas scheduled to play yesterday, but it was 42 deg so NO, not that keen.
rest day today , then on the move tomorrow to a new destination, next weeks forecast is cooler with heavy rain so probably end up cancelling again. such is life of a touring golfer.
Can break 80ParticipantTony and I have volunteered to cook the BBQ after today’s game. The game is some sort of hybrid style 4 player team event.
Anyway most of the field elected to start at 12:45 and only three groups at 7:45. This left the course fairly vacant, so Tony and I decided to have practice hit starting at 8;30 and follow behind the field.Tony isn’t a long hitter, but he is very accurate, especially inside 100 m. His short game is excellent.
We bogeyed hole 1, then I managed to clip the trees on the right side of the fairway. My starting line for my attempted fade was too far right and the wind didn’t have a chance to push the ball back to the centre of the fairway, as I had hoped for. Tony crept up on the hole, down the centre, while I zigzagged playing army golf. My 6 H approach shot was pin high, but left by about 10 m. A simple chip was all that I needed, not the thinned shot that scurried over to the other side of the green. Darn; double bogey on hole 2!
My tee shot on hole three hooked a bit, so I had a PW rescue over to the other side. I hit a 3H shot 188m ( impressive) to be just short of the green on the par 5. I bumped another 3H shot onto the green and two putted for a bogey. I managed another good tee shot on hole 4 getting over the ridge. It was not quite as long as yesterday’s effort. I hit the 9i approach shot fat, but managed to get it on the green with a 50% swing PW. Bogey result. My tee shot on hole 5 was effective, hitting the green with a slighlty faded/ almost straight flight. I sunk a 4.6m putt at last for a birdie. The 6th hole was uneventful par. I hit a 200m fade ( can I call it a power fade?) , then a 50% 9 i and 2 putts. Now on the seventh hole, things got interesting. I am pleased to report that I hit my tee shot 245m into the left side bunkers. I had only reached them once before. Yes, there was a bit of wind assistance there. I hit my 7W shot out of the bunker 176 m and it rolled into the green side bunker. My 60 degree wedge shot was near the pin ( 1.6m), but I missed the birdie putt. I bogeyed the 8th and 9th holes. On the 10th I put my tee shot into the right side trees. I punched out with the 3H 97 m through the trees ( hero shot). I feel confident with the low flat draw shaped shot , so maybe It isn’t a hero shot at all! We played 11 ( bogey) , but caught the field, so we skipped over to the 16th hole. My drive went 201m and the 4W 184m, so the wind had dropped a bit. I bogeyed 16,17 &18.
Overall a workman like outcome. Some holes were not pretty, but I managed to grind out bogeys when the shots were not perfect.Have a great Christmas XRMan and Mrs XRMAN and all your children and grandchildren and hope to catch up with you both in for another game around early Feb.
