I played a 9 hole practice round using recycled Kirkland Signature balls.
Those balls really spin high. I noticed a slight drop in driver distance, but any shot to the green stopped dead.

I played in the local Stableford comp this morning. The weather was cool and overcast with light winds, then it rained, then the wind strengthened from the South and it got a bit warmer at the end.

I played consistently average golf! 89 OTS.( 4pars, 11 bogeys and three doubles)

I hit 6/14 fairways, 8 GIR, 2 up and downs. The down side was 38 putts. Today it felt like there was a force field around the hole. Not just for me but we all struggled to drop them today. I got the long ones close, but anything within 8 m I missed.

I was consistently leaving the Driver face open at impact today. Not a lot ( no huge slices) but I rolled a tee shot into the trees on the right on hole #4 and had to punch out, then the same on Hole #9, and mishit the approach shot with my 6 Hybrid into the weeds left side. Or how to hit double bogeys.

    Two steps
    1) Driver distance has improved
    2) short game accuracy was improved

    One Step back
    1) This is a hard one to determine. My putter speed control was off today, leaving too many short from inside 8 m. But, my faded tee shots were initially a bit too far right start line wise and went too far right. I got it better as the game went on. My last tee shot was an attempted fade with my 4W. I turned it over and ended up 20 m wide of the green, left side. Oops!

It wasn’t my best day on the course today. It was blowing hard from the East and I found it hard to find the fairways off the tee.
Then at the other end of the hole I missed a few sitters.
92 OTS; far too many doubles ( 6)
On the bright side , my short game worked OK.

Like the quote “änything within 8m I missed”.

8 m is a long putt, and we should not be trying to get them, or more important dont be too disappointed if you dont get them..
. The best players in the world make 1/10 from over 20 ft (6m) so we should expect to 2 putt at best from that distance

The putting stat to always look at is how many were you made inside 1m.

    7 a.m. practice session
    1) Tee shots sorted by stance change
    2) putting face control improved by slight grip change that stopped me closing the face. Line it up and let it go and don’t look up.
    3) Hybrid chipping worked out two methods that worked; one for level chips and one for up and over rises.
    4) chipping with LW/SW no fat and thin shots using Steve Johnson’s lead hand strong/ trail hand weak grip.

    Golf is fun again.

Today I played 9 holes with Tony at 7 a.m.

I didn’t warm up and it was a bit of dew on the ground. My choice of foot wear ( sneakers) wasn’t ideal as my trial foot broke traction on the first tee shot. I had no shot at the green on the second. Seeing that we were just fooling around I tried smashing a 7 W and seeing if I could fluke a through the trees hero shot. Nope; but I was on the other side of the trees on the corner. I checked the distance to the landing area and selected an 8 iron. It would have been ideal had I hit it well. I did hit a good 50% LW shot onto the green. One good shot out of 6 on the first hole/ Double Bogey start.

My attempted fade tee shot on hole #2 was almost, but no cigar. My start line was too central, so the ball faded and just clipped the right side trees. My next shot was faded 6H that ended pin high , but left of the green. I hit a 50/50 chip shot onto the green with my GW. I am feeling more confident with that shot now. I just missed the 2.4m putt. Bogey is good.

I left my Drive on #3 out right side semi rough. The 3H fade shot punch out low draw worked well. I hit a 81 m GW shot close to the pin, but missed the 1.4 m putt just ( short). Par.

Hole #4 is not my most loved hole. I did however hit a nice draw 191m up and over the ridge( right side is ideal), then followd with a91M PW shot to 3.7m from the pin. I missed the birdie putt, but only just. Mental note: my putting is improving. Par ( really happy with a par on this hole)

Hole 5 my 4W was accurate but short. I chipped on with a 9 iron uphill, but I was 4 m short of the pin. Poor club selection? Bogey 4 score.

I hit a nice fade off the tee on #6 , then missed the green with a 9i ( 10 m short) due to a poor strike. This time I got the 50/50 GW close and hit a 1.5 m par putt in the hole.

I played Army golf on hole #7. I pushed my tee shot ( AM i aiming too far right?) and had to hit a low fade out from the pines. I managed the low bit O,K, , but fade ? Nope it was straight into the left rough, next to a stump. I had to lean agianst the stump to get a swing. I did hit a nice SW shot onto the green (one good shot out of 6) for bogey.

My 7i tee shot on the downhill par 3 #8 hole was great. I only just missed the 6m uphill putt. Par.

Another failed fade off the tee on hole 9. I clipped a tree on the right side. This left me with 120 m out and a tree in the way. Just to make things interesting, there was a Koala sleeping in the tree on my line. I had to commit to the shot and it went over the tree and I can inform you that no Koalas were harmed in the making of the shot. I ball ended up pin high and on the verge of the green. I missed the 7 m putt , but it was a tap in.

So 41 OTS. Arccos told me I was half a stroke off a 8 handicap level ( my target) . My weakness areas Driving and putting, but strengths were approach and short game. I hit 4/7 fairways. 4/9 GIR, 1/4 up and downs, 17 putts.

How did Tony do? Well he is getting more carry with his new Driver, hits the Cleveland hybrid- irons really well and is a demon inside 90 m. Case in point was his birdie on hole #8, where he chipped in from about 40 m out in the right rough. Perfection!
His putting is a thing of beauty to watch.

We play again tomorrow in the local comp. The early morning starts are a great way to start your day. It is so peaceful out there.

    Two steps
    1) I am feeling more confident off the tee, possibly just need to aim a little left.
    2) putting is improving.

    One step
    1) remember to wear golf shoes

I didn’t feel as if I played all that well, but I still scored an 86 round/ 34 points. Weather was mild and warm, with just enough breeze to stop us from over heating. We are not used to hot weather!

7 pars, 8 bogeys and 3 doubles. 5/14 Fairways hit, 9/18 GIR, 1/6 up and down. 39 putts.

    Two Steps forward
    1) I finished with a wet sail ; 5 pars in 6 holes
    2) irons and hybrids worked well today

    One Step back
I think it is time for me to change to my summer putter ( toe hang) which I seem to play better with on faster greens.
I was trying to fade some tee shots, but managed to over fade several into the right rough. Driver distance had improved , but
    today my accuracy was poor.

After the game I hit about 10 or so fade Drivers off a lower ( white castle) tee and the low slight fade shot I had been trying to produce happened fairly often. I will try it next match.

Well I tried the lower tee and it worked really well 50 % of the time. The other times I over faded the ball into trouble still. I think it si lack of commitment to aim at the trees left side of the fairway and trust that the ball won’t hit them.

I played quite consistently for the front 9, but the heat and humidity caught up with us. It was 31 degrees and very humid, not conditions we are used to. There was no wind! Not even a gentle zephyr. 94OTS ( C grade game)

My tee shots were inaccurate and that lead to some higher scores. I hit 5/14 fairways; mostly pushing out right again. Even my iron strikes were poor at times. I hit 5/18 GIR and made one up and down/11. 36 putts, several 3 putts,

it poured rain a few minutes ago, but no it is sunny and hot again! Weird weather for southern coastal Victoria.

I have been working on my driver shots on the range and seem to have reduced my in to out path a little. It resulted in less pushes out right and a more usable draw shape. Same with the fade shots. I reduced the amount of cut I was putting into the swing and now the ball was going left of target with just a bit of late fade.

Tomorrow I pay the Veterans at Hamilton. it is supposed to be low 30’s and humid, so it will be interesting to see how I go. We all had a bit of wilting happening last game in those conditions. Can you Banana Benders please arrange to keep your heat/ humidity to yourselves.

I had a look at my last game at Hamilton ( not the scrapes course) last year on Arccos Dashboard App, to familiarize myself with the course and make a plan for the game. If I stick to it, maybe I will beat my 91 score from 2021.

I am sorry to inform you that I failed to improve on my last score in Hamilton ( 91) . I hit an 92 OTS today.
The previous game was in 2021 and I recall being in windy, cold conditions. Today there was low cloud up until we got the game started at about 10:30. As the sun burned the fog off it was humid. Then, as the game progressed it got hotter up to 35 degrees.

Our group started on hole #2. I hit a series of pars ( 3) and 5 bogeys. Once we started the back 9 , I either hit par ( 3) or double bogeys (7) .

What caused the double bogeys? I put it down to my usually solid short game going to sleep. I hit 40 putts! Two of the three putts were tap ins that I rushed. I suspect that I hit them with the putter heel/ went left. I was left with a long first putt too often. Even my trusty single length hybrid chips went wide of the mark. Some of my attempts with the 60 degree wedge close to the green were hit thin. Maybe it is time to swap to the 60 with less bounce for the harder lies in summer.? Maybe I tried to get too cute with my chips at the flag and came up short, rather than getting it on the green and putting back to the pin?

    Two steps forward
    1) long game worked pretty well. Average tee shot 198m/ 227 m longest/ hitting 6/14 fairways, but many TSIP as well.
I persisted with trying to fade the Driver and towards the end of the game I got a couple of good ones. Early on my start line was too central and the ball fades right rough a few times.
    2) Approach shots with 7 i, 6H, 4H ( 120-155m) were good.

    One Step back.
Chipping accuracy put pressure on my putter and missing two tap ins hurt!

Another 7 a.m. practice round in cooler slightly windy (from South) conditions. It even rained a bit too.

I worked out that being lazy and wearing my runners on hole #1 was a mistake. My trail foot slipped on the tee shot and the approach shot, so I stopped and donned my spiked shoes. Both shots went short and too far left, but were playable. What I wanted to try out today was my single length wedges ( 56 /60) now that the ground is getting harder. They have 10 and 4 degrees of bounce, which is too little in winter. My third shot from a fairly bare lie with the 60 degree felt really good and rolled up to the verge of the green. I had a long putt to the pin an dover estimated the strength needed and went past about 2m . The Arc Master putter feels lighter and softer than the Wilson Midway putter I have been using in winter. I just missed the 2 m putt back. Double bogey.

I am still trying to perfect a ” power” fade of the tee. On #2 I aimed way left into the trees and let it go. It went straight into the trees! I think I et it turn over a bit. So I tried my trusty SL 3H hook punch shot and got 108m further down the fairway, but it hooked a bit much into the left rough on the downslope of a grassy mound. I added one club for the distance because of the poor lie/ thicker grass and got it close to the left side of the green, almost pin high. I have been using the SL 3H for bump and run shots like this and it worked. I had a tap in putt ( didn’t miss it) for a bogey.

On hole #3 I had the breeze at my back ( Arccos said it was 6 M per second= 21 KPH) and my strike off the tee wasn’t great bu the ball went 202m and rolled into the left rough under the pine trees. I tried a 7 W shot just to see if it would work, but the 3H would have been a better choice. I was about 110m out and tried an 8iron shot, but the wind assisted it about 6m and the ball was uphill on the green. I trickled the downhill putt , but ended a meter short , still uphill. I just missed with the second putt. Another bogey!

Hole#4 ( my nemesis) my tee shot with Drive just made it over the rise left side. I had to aim right of the green to avoid an overhanging tree. I tried to draw the 9i left towards the pin, but it hit the far side wall of the bunker. Possibly I should have added one iron for the wind. I used th e60 degree/ 04 bounce and it got the ball out of the firm bunker sand fine. I managed a par.

On Hole #5 I tried another fade off the tee with Driver, but it started on line but didn’t fade much at all. I had to chip onto the green with 7 iron, but on rolled off. I took three putts from 11m for a double bogey result.

The tee shot on hole 6 was a success. 198m fade. My GW approach went over the pin by 10m . Another 3 putts, but only just missed the second putt. Bogey.

The tee shot on #7 was a cracker; 240m and not wind assisted. I ended up in the bunker on the left, but I was very please with the distance. I hit a 7W shot off the sand and got it a little fat. It left 80 m out and my GW got it just to the edge ( should have clubbed up). Still a 2 putt for par was a good outcome.

I hit a 7i off the tee into the wind on hole 8, but it ended up short in the bunker. I wanted to use the 60 degree! It worked again. Bogey.

The tee shot on #9 faded on command, but into the wind it didn’t qualify as a Power fade at all ( 152m), but at least I had a clear shot at the green. I hit a choked down 6H shot at the green ( usually good for 130m) but it made 110m and it felt a good strike. Putting was good from 10 m . Par.

    Two steps
    1) I felt like the SL wedges were easy to control. They are significantly lighter in the head than a variable length wedge. The Arc Master putter is so close to dropping more putts. My misses are small with it.
    2) I think I am getting the feel I need to fade the tee shots. I at least got the starting line working, if not the amount of fade.

    One Step backwards.
The fade shot isn’t reliable yet. I want to be able to use it to avoid the ball going into the rough on the dog leg right holes we have. If I draw the tee shot it often runs into the rough. Practice!

    OTS 44; 3/7 fairways hit , 4/9 GIR, up/down 2/5, 20 putts. ave approach distance 108m. TSIP 6/9.
Arccos tells me I am within 1 stroke of my target handicap (8) in the tee shots, approach shots, slighlty below 8 level on the short game, but 2.2 more in the putting area.

Another 7 a.m. 9 holes practice round, but this time the back 9. I was trying to compare a Kirkland Signature + ball and my gamer Snell MTB-X. That and I was continuing to try to get a reliable fade shot off the tee.

Hole 10 tee shot a good fade 170 m. Hole 11 I started the shot too central and it went slightly right of the green. I got a good shape , but not much distance into wind on 12 ( 150m) . I hit 194m fade on 13 ( wind assist) . I hit a draw on 14 into the wind ( 202m) , then a 204m fade down wind on 15. then 196m cross wind ( from right) . 217 m draw shot on 17 and a 170 m fade onto the green on 18 using my 4W. In other words I hit the fairway 9/9.

2 pars , 7 bogeys 43 OTS. I am hitting around about my handicap.

The balls? I think I could game the Kirklands. I need the spin to keep the ball in air for longer.

Today’ short practice session is trying to hit 5 balls onto the green from 40.50.60m then circle drill putting from inside 3 m. Arccos data shows this is my weakness (well my latest one/two) ,

    40 m = 40% SW@ 50% swing
    50m =80% SW @% swing
    60 m =40% SW@90% swing

I hit the green more often, but they didn’t stay on the green.

The putting? I got about 40 % in the hole and the misses were small. I made myself concentrate for the tap in putts, not rush them= 100%

Best practice you have done yet as this will result in the most improvement and shot saving.
dont worry about flag hunting, just get ball some where on green from those distances.
dont despair at 4/10 from 3ft, set as a goal and try to make 5 next time, then 6 time after.

Another 7 a.m. practice session. I played the back 9 and used Steve Johnson’s Games within the game concept.
First game is “position” form the tee shot, ( twice on par 5 holes) , then the second game is attack the green/ get it on the green , the next game is chipping close ” scoring game”, then the last is the ” end game” ( putt in two).

I started OK on hole 10, with a good 203m drive to position ( left of centre), then I hit the green with a 7 i short but it rolled off ( 50% success?) I chipped on with GW but it was short ( 7 m from pin) ( fail) and two putted ( pass). 3/4 result.

Hole11 my tee shot on par 3 went a bit left, but pin high. position check! The next shot was a PW bump and run onto the green ( attack/ check) . I two putts form 3.7m (end/ check) 4/4

Hole 12 192m to middle of FW ( position/ check) . Attack the green with a 180 M 7W shot that rolled a long way onto the green ( attack/ check) Do I get bonus points?? and Two putt from 4.6 m ( end/ check) 4/4 since I didn’t need a scoring shot.

Hole 13 193m Tee shot to left of centre. The a 7 W that caught the wind and only went 147m . ( fail) I had to fade a 8i around the corner trees and just misses the green ( attack / fail) The scoring shot with 3H got me within 1.5 m. I missed the putt but down in 2 , so pass end game. 2/4 score

Hole 14.I hit a longish but straight Drive over the dam, but it rolled off the fairway into the trees right rough. ( fail/ position) My attack shot with the SL 3H low punch got me within 30 m of the green ( Fail/ attack) The 60 degree wedge/ 50% power got onto the green ( scoring / pass) and I two putted form 6.6 m ( pass end game) 2/4 score.

Hole 15 I hit a 190 m Draw shape tee shot to teh dog leg corner ( pass position), the a 155 m 5H ( now set at 23.5 degree) to the green ( attack pass) and two putted form 9.9 m ( end; pass) 4/4 score.

Hole 16 was into the glaring sun. I tried a fade aiming at the left side tree and hit it heel side of centre. Piss poor effort for 179m but it was in a good spot for shot two. I must have hooked / over cooked the second shot 159m ( 4W) and it ended up in the left rough just. I couldn’t see the ball flight ( position/ fail) .I was still about 170 m out , so I thought aim right of the green and hit another 4 W. I got the same result short and hooky. Anyway I used the SW to get the ball on the green. 1.7 m from the pin ( score: pass) and two putted ( end; pass) score 2/4

Hole 17 I hit a good draw 210m to the right side of the fairway ( position; pass) My 8 iron shot pulled a little left of my intended target, but that was where the pin was (Attack; pass). I was aiming right of centre and hoping to draw in back in. I two putted from 4.6m out ( pass) Score 4/4

Hole 18 is a par 3 into the wind 170m to the front of the green. I tried the 4W again and got the same result ( short hook) but it was in the middle . (Position; pass) I used by distance card to select a low bump and run shot and hit the 9 iron 42m but a tad left of my intended line. (Scoring : pass) I two putted from 1.5 m ( end pass) Score 4/4

The 4 mini -games was a bit of fun. I think it helped focus the purpose of each shot. It also reduced my stress level when putting. Thinking that I have two shots, made me relax on the first putt. My misses were small. They will start to drop in soon based on the law of averages.

What did I learn? Adjusting the Cobra F7 hybrid to 23.5 degrees gave me a 155m shot. It was creeping up to the 7W average shot when set at 22 degrees. I took some time on the range after the 9 holes to work out why I am hooking the Cobra F9 4 wood. I was thinking maybe the longer shaft is giving me too much toe up ( lie angle) and heading the shots left? Anyway I tried out that hypothesis by choking down and still got too much draw shape. I eventually worked out that if I lead more with my hands the club face wasn’t closing so quickly and I gained control again.

My next game is Thursday. I hope I see a little improvement.
