West Gippsland Vets vs South Gippy Vets at Warragul yesterday.
A poor attendance by Souths, only 18 players bothered, but their scoring was better than Wests (64 players). Their average was 29 points while ours was only 26.
The course was in excellent condition and the club put on a good feed for us all.
I only scored 30 points, but at least I beat the average.
The weather was kind to us, although there was strong heat from the sun towards the end, high 20s.

4BBB stab yesterday. Partnered with a 10 ‘capper with another 10 in the group. They both hit the ball really well, a pleasure to watch.
We came in with 42 points, enough for a ball dtl.

    8 out of 18?
If you include the ‘on rare occasions’ ones, then yes. But usually no.

Greens in reg are mostly out of range. Far too often it takes me par just to get on the green, then I need a 1-putt.

Stab at Warra today. Lots went wrong, even one off a tree into water (but retrieved the ball).
Front nine: three 3-putts, three wipes, = 12 points with 20 putts.
Back nine: only one wipe, no more 3-putts.
Total for the day: 28 points but a whopping 36 putts.
    But the weather was good.

    Vets at Morwell today.
Most drives were fairly straight (more than half anyway), but a few barely made 100m (duffed, trees, whatever).
    Wiped 2 holes.
The big problem was with putting on the tricky slopes. Having eight 1-putts might seem good, but not when you consider that I also had six 3-putts, one resulted in a wipe but the other 5 all dragged the score on those holes down to 1 point.
    End result was 29 points.

The course was in excellent condition although the greens were a bit slow compared to what I’m used to.

Oldies’ nine hole at Warra yesterday. Playing off 22, I had extra shots on 2 holes and finished with 20 points. That’ll cost me 2 off the ‘cap for next time and I didn’t win the day.

    Foursomes at Warra today.
What can you say about bloody foursomes?
    Except nett score 75.5
    Weather was good.

    Stab at Warra yesterday.
    17 putts out – all 2s with one 1-putt.
15 back in but there was a 3-putt there on a long green after a pitiful chip.
Points: 15 out with one wipe and one 1-point.
A pick-up and a 1-point with only one 3-point on the way back in.
So that was 31 points with 32 putts.

Using mi-score and entering putts as I go, I have an ongoing battle to keep putts under points. A game within the game that tells me so much along the way.

Oldies’ nine hole at Warra yesterday. 19 points

Yellow tee stab at Warra today: playing h’cap of 6 in lieu of 18.
So much easier to get a green in reg !!
    Front nine: 1 bogey, 2 birdies, 6 pars: that’s 1 under par and 22 points with 16 putts (three 3-putts and a chip-in).
Back nine: only 3 pars, bogeys on the other 6 holes, only two 1-putts = 16 putts, 15 points.
    Daily total 37 points.

Interesting exercise. If I could hit my drives 100m longer, I could readily play to 6.

not a matter of hitting it 100m further .
On contrary, what you have done is exactly how handicap golfers should approach the game and its what the international handicap system allows you to do.
    .
ie find the best tee for your playing ability.
in other words play of the yellow tees every week until you can break 80, then move back to red, until break 80, then move back to white , then the blues.

Playing off 6 and off the yellows, it was easy to break 80.
I’d need to wear a skirt if I played off the reds.
    So, whites it is.
I’ll never get that 100m longer, it’s just wishful thinking.

Stab at Warra today in very blustery wind.
In the clubhouse, complaints were plentiful about the wind blowing balls off the greens.
I only had one wipe and one 3-putt.
But only three 3-point holes and only three 1-putts.

All that adds up to 34 points and with 34 putts.

    Stab at Warra again today.
Front nine 14 putts helped me accrue 19 points even with one wipe.
On the back nine, two 3-putts meant another 16 putts for a 30 total and 17 points for a 36 point total.
That’s better than I’ve managed for some time.

With (par – scratch) taking 5 off players’ handicaps, the end result will be that all players’ handicaps will go out by 5 strokes, although it might take a year or more.
    That raises two issues.
    1. The club’s handicap pennant teams will have higher handicaps than they really deserve. Not so, some will say, this course is easier than par would suggest and this is an equaliser. But it actually works the other way.
    2. When playing the course, players need to take one off the par on five holes and that becomes their target. So, which par 5s need to be treated as par 4s? Which par 3s need to be played as par 2s? And which 320m par 4s are now par 3s?
The golfers’ various abilities haven’t changed, so their handicaps will have to, in order to reestablish equilibrium.

Just the usual stab at Warra today.
    Absolutely fabulous golf weather.
Two wipes on the front nine (just careless) had me on 14 points at the turn. 16 on the back for a 30 point total.
Three 3-putts didn’t help and it felt like I missed plenty of putts by the tiniest margin. But a 31 putt total meant I must have 1-putted nearly half the holes.
Too many drives were far from straight.
