Yesterday….. checked what trail balls I had in car….. Bugger The Smiling Assassin had Ball 1, the PMG had Ball 3, The creek had Ball 2 so I had Ball 4 to use….. Had been leaving this to last as after conversations with Boz he reckoned this would be the best ball….. So that decision was made….. Back and mind were now in agreement that one could actually pivot during swing so off we went into the unknown…..
Front nine played to my handicap….. did notice that the ball was for some unknown reason attracted to trees….. worked out putting speed and was confident….
Back nine WOW…. 5 pars and 24 points later…… nearly had to handicap myself for an exceptional round…. 42 points for the day, back survived and one was a clear clubhouse leader….
The ball, yep Boz was right it is different to his other balls……
Why you ask
Boz’s balls usually have some roll out on greens, this ball when one hits lob wedge/sand wedge etc well props and stops… doesn’t spin itself stupid like but definitely dances around on landing…… WOW
So after hitting numerous tree’s, all but on two occasions getting away with a par it is a great ball.
Solid of tee, solid of fairways and excels around greens….. it is workable managed to baby draw and fade it as required and once speed control was worked out on greens was given another tick of approval….Next week back to some revaluation of balls used previously,,,, more than happy with what one has to try out for the man and looking forward to the future with other new balls that are in the wings
boz sent new a couple sleeves of new red to try out. Not sure when next game is at this point. Maybe late June

Not sure on who all is committing to come yet. We will discuss in late June and make a decision on holding not not and confirm that all courses will still be available. Mainly the pre and post rounds

Played this morning on my day off, in just slightly less than ideal conditions.
A touch of cold air, and more than a drop or two of precipitation throughout the round. Some good shots were struck, but they were few and far between and were interspersed with too much rubbish.
I’ve tweaked the Cobra F9 driver a touch of late and am getting used to its differences. It’s a touch shorter now, the grip has also been on a diet, and the clubs loft setting is down to about 7.5 or 8.
I’ve also introduced a bit more body tilt when hitting off the tee, and gone with the 3 1/4 inch tees, rather than my usual 4 inch tees for the driver.
The reasons being, previously without much body tilt away from the target, I was hitting closer to the low point of my swing, swinging flatter, losing loft, and adding sidespin (hence previously using 4 inch tees to try and alleviate that issue and force myself to hit on the up).
The new method does show some promise, I hit a few nice launching ones today, and they flew nice and long (there is no run on the course at all with it being very damp underfoot). I have a few issues with the clubface at impact in getting it set just right (a couple of big draws), but its a visual thing at address. I need to set the angle of the clubface correctly at address and good things happen . if I have it closed a touch, then look out hook …… so its just getting used to that visual cue of the clubface and how it should sit at address in order to make it repeatable and predictable.
My irons were not too bad today, I hit some nice ones despite the conditions, but I got penalised on at least 3 approach shots where I flushed them onto the green by a few metres, only to see them spin back off and down the sloping front fringes. In fact the only time they didn’t spin back was when I put a couple past the pin ……… much to my annoyance.
Pro V1X …… nice balls though despite spinning a lot or not at all.
Putting and chipping were just woeful today, and led to at least 4 wipes from memory. I wasn’t that fussed though, I was just happy to be out there having a hit on my day off. I’ve long since stopped worrying about my score, preferring just to enjoy a round and the fun or challenging shots it might occasionally offer up.
In other news though, my regular playing partner and I may be looking for a different home of golf later on in the year when the membership is up for renewal.
I reckon I’m starting to get over the soft wintery conditions and will possible be looking for firmer, greener pastures, particularly a landscape which has maybe more than 7 bunkers and is truly playable all year around.
Having been at Beacy for around 8 or 9 years, I reckon its time for a change, but where to go …. that’s the question. I had thought of Cranbourne but I see that’s in the news this very evening, as someone has carved swastika’s into some of their greens. I don’t mean to cast nasturtiums at anyone, but a few former Beacy members have moved to Cranny recently, so if I were the boys in blue, they would be a good place to start!!.
That being said, its not a course I’d really entertain. We are sussing out the memberships of various other courses, and there is not much between a few of them, notably Keysie, Sandhurst, Settlers Run in terms of cost etc. (A Keysie membership does come with some baggage I believe), as well as being a bugger of a spot to get to.
One of the things I’m used to, is pretty much getting to play when I want, eg early morning etc, so that is a factor to consider.
Other possible courses involve more of a drive, and that being the case, that may get a tad annoying or monotonous, so at this stage there is no preferred option leaping out of the pack. The old membership doesn’t run out til about October anyway, so we have plenty of time to consider all of them, and try a few.
Anyway, that’s enough to ponder for one evening, time to go load some decent music clips on the tube of you, whilst the Beloved’s busy watching Home and Bloody Away ……..

I beg to differ on the time perspective.
I’m pretty sure I could get my card out of my pocket and enter both my playing partners score and my own score before any mobile phone would actually open up , let alone have some one enter in a score. Most phones have some sort of security measure required before they open and then there’s the time taken for any app to open up. And then the scores need to be entered. Miclub app itself isn’t fast to open.
Then you have a couple of weather issues. Too sunny and you’ve got to get the screen where you can see it. If it’s raining the phone needs to be in a waterproof section of your bag and then pulled out and opened up.
Our captain is trying to get us to use this app and I know one lady member who has to carry a powerbank plugged into her phone because it was running her battery down to 10%.
During the worst of the covid we were only allowed to mark our own cards. This has long gone and we’re now back to normal, marking our playing partners card. The only thing we don’t do now is run the card through the scanner in the pro shop.
Call me old fashioned, but this is one piece of technology absolutely not needed on the golf course.Our of interest. Do you still pay for things with cash I or mostly use a credit card?
Not sure of the relevance re paying cash.
My argument is that this thing will take longer.
Think about it…….you finish a hole, the bloke who’s card you’re marking tells you his score and you take out the card and enter 2 numbers (4 if you want to enter stableford points) and one dot or cross for the card reader. Done in about 10 seconds.
With the phone you get the phone out, unlock it using one of several security systems, then scroll or swipe until you find the app, Tap the app….wait until it opens (this step alone will take longer than marking a scorecard with a pencil) and then enter a number when you find the appropriate section.
Our current system you don’t even have to add up the score at the end of the round….if all the dots are there the card reader in the pro shop does it all….in the blink of an eye.
The way of the future….nup…massive backward step. I can just see some of our older guys all standing around on a tee box trying to do this. Incidentally, many of our members don’t even take a phone to golf.Takes longer to pay with cash, get change Etc than a tap of a credit card?
We have moved into the modern world with this type of stuff. I can see the point your are trying to make but feel it’s minimal savings of time if any at all.
I’m assuming that with it being Oatlands, and on a Sunday, that it will be a handicap required event??
