xrmanParticipantTwo steps forward:
Progress at last on taming my Driver with a draw shape.
I watched Mike Melaska’s video on grip and timing of closing the club face. I thought that I had been using a a strong grip with my left hand and matching it with the right ( trail side) hand. I followed the directions to check whether I had a square face at impact and it wasn’t . Hence the push shot. I rotated my stance a little more left and strengthened my left hand grip a little more than comfortable/ usual feeling and checked the club face at full arm extension. The combination gave a much better more central ball distribution.
Mike’s idea for the right hand in the grip is that it fits over the left and supplies the power into the back of the ball. The wrist sort of flaps back in the back swing and through during release. It removes the need to roll wrists and time it correctly ( I suck at that)One step back:
I still feel like I am steering the ball rather than a fluid draw curve. I guess I will have to progressively hit it harder and not worry about reverting to a push, adding more right hand “flap” until I start getting a hook, then dial it back a bit.1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantGuilty as charged at various times during a game. The errors are getting fewer, but brain farts still occur.
xrmanParticipantTwo steps forward: Today my chipping and putting worked pretty well.
One Step back: I was playing to my handicap up until hole 17 , when I hit ( mishit) three fat shots in a row. I was tired, cold and over it. Playing golf on wet, cold windy days is wearing.
two step forward; I guess it was the putting speed today and I sunk 4 about 8 footers.
one step back; I missed two sitters from a foot out. I must have lost concentration and let the face of the putter close a bit

xrmanParticipantThere are about 3-5 holes that favour draw shape on out tree line course. Plus I want to be able to develop the skill. I can do it with my FW woods, but the Driver eludes me.
These are two very distinctly different reasons, but both equally valid.
I am just trying to get a better feel for the holes, when you say “favour” does that mean that there is a short dog leg that you need to be around the corner for a shot at the green? as in, the trees on the left hand side completely block the green if you’re still on the right hand side of the fairway or is it that it’s a better angle coming into a tricky green being on the left?Do you give any consideration to where you tee it up within the tee block on these holes, this does come with it’s own risks when the shot does go straight after you’ve aimed along the left hand edge…but still
and yep, everyone wants to hit drawing bombs with driver
Yes, what you said B&R, I am trying to get the ball in position for a clear second shot at the green on a dog leg shaped hole. .Tall trees on the inside corners complicate the issue. For example, on a dogleg right it would be ideal if I could fade the ball through the bend. Unfortunately I just don’t have the distance to do it , except with a prodigious hit. The ball fades a little too much and I don’t have a clear shot, because the trees are in the way. If I send a fade shot down the left side of the fairway ( sometimes above the trees / tempting fate) and it stays left of centre, I can get a clear second shot, albeit a longer shot. If I could reliably hit a draw shape shot to the outside corner of the dogleg, life would be less stressful. I see other players doing it and wish I could get the draw shape to work every time.
xrmanParticipantI had to laugh at myself on hole 7 yesterday. After practising the pitching over the bunker pre-game, when the situation came up, I thought don’t drop it in the bunker. I hit it hard enough to clear the bunker O.K.and then some. It went over the pin and into the long rough. Then my delicate finesse shot out to the short sided pin was way too delicate. So a two putt for a double bogey 7. All because I mishit my approach shot ( shot 3) . Such is golf! Next round.
xrmanParticipantWants to hit bombz like Phil?
I wish. I would need retro rockets to get anywhere near 330 yards.
xrmanParticipantBump’s silly question time.
1. Why do you need to hit a draw with the big dog? There are about 3-5 holes that favour draw shape on out tree line course. Plus I want to be able to develop the skill. I can do it with my FW woods, but the Driver eludes me.
xrmanParticipantI watched a video by Mr Short Game in which he gave 3 drills to break 80.
It covered drills for
1) Tee shots to get the ball on the fairway
2) Pitching (over a bunker, from the bunker, from the verge)
3) 40 foot putts up and down hill.I need the first one. I know I can hit the fairway with my 4W and 3H and faded Driver shots. The draw shot for me is a challenge with Driver. My last game I did hit shots i wasn’t 100% sure I could hit well. It resulted in about 5 extras shots getting out of trouble. It was windy and I didn’t swap out the 4W ( high flight) for the 3W ( lower flight) and maybe the 7W for the 17 degree hybrid for the 160 m shot.
Pitching I am O.K. at up close to the green, This drill assumes that the iron shot just missed the green. I do this often enough. I also need to practice pitching for winter, rather than bump and runs in the soggy fairways inside 60 m. Sand bunkers are firm here so the spalsh shot with a high bounce wedge doesn’t work.
Putting has been pretty good of late. My main issue is that I can get the ball close with the long putt, but miss the 5 footers. Miss reads or too tentative. So I would add sinking the 5 footers to Mr. SG’s drill.

xrmanParticipantAh well, I had a big back step today Weetbix. It was cold and windy today. Wet soggy ground conditions made bump and run shots unpredictable. I made a few poor choices ( hero shots, strategy errors, poor strike issues, club selection errors) . Still there there is always the next round.

xrmanParticipant3 putting is so frustrating! The putts can all be quite reasonable; so near, yet so far! Bowls isn’t quite so punishing of a short shot or not quite on line. You say they are strategically placed misses.

xrmanParticipantToday’s practice session with Driver trying to improve my draw shape shot was a partial success. It isn’t an ingrained habit as yet.
xrmanParticipantMadam , how do I change the title of this thread from range finder to launch monitor?

xrmanParticipantThat’s the most frustrating thing about golf, one week it’s the Driver next week it’s irons then Putter. Getting it all to click every week is the hardest thing. But when it does, how good is golf. I think we love it because it’s hard.
If it was easy we would get bored and drift into playing bowls!

xrmanParticipantThat’s a bit stuff , isn’t it! ( in Kiwi)
What about trying a bit of pre- closure on the club face ( like at 11 o’clock) before swinging at a fade. Mike Melaska has a good video on how to power fade on You Tube. I don’t have the link sorry. He instructed a golfer on how to get full release with the Driver and still get a fade, rather than the hold the heel of the club back method.
