How is the new Wilson blade putter performing on the putting mat.

Its going very nicely thanks Geoffrey. Perhaps one day soon I’ll get to test it out on grass.

I’m starting to tire of playing indoor golf, and am more than ready to test my game back outside in amongst the elements.

For those of us in prison, probably golfing is going to be at least another 4 or 5 weeks away, and then limited play in 2’s until Christmas
mean while country golf continues as normal.
    Nothing makes sense.

Does anything in greater Melbourne make sense at present. No sense in asking any of the politician’s, because their response will be, “I can’t recall”!!!

yes – what was the question?

Country golf is not quite normal. We are still required to wear masks on the golf course. Since we have not had a Covid case in months, it smacks of virtue signalling. Still as we have recenlty seemn it only takes one carrier to spread the virus back to the rural areas. No use of the club house facilities is permitted.

At least we are back to comp golf in groups of fours.

Social golf in pairs is better than nothing.

I played two games this week.

On Monday I played the local Vets comp at Dartmoor. It is a 9 hole country course on the banks of the swollen Gleneleg River, bordering South Australia. It has been very wet in Western Victoria over th elast weeks. The game was supposed to be at Heywood, but was moved to the dryer Dartmoor course. Last time I played th ecourse th egreens were fast and a little hard to read. This time the recenlty sanded and cored greens were just hard to read. The first time around the course Iwas getting on the green well, but putting was terrible. Line and length eluded me. On the second circuit from different tee boxes, I worked out that treating the greens like a sand scrape putt worked better. No finesse, more hit it at the hole firmly and watch the ball’s roll to work out the second putt. I scored 11/16 points, for an upimpressive 27 points.

Nest day I played at Portland. I played with a scratch player, his son and another mid handicapper. This time my tee shots let me down and put pressure on my scoring. It was bliss being back on predictable greens. I dropped a few long ones. Score 32points.

    Two steps forward.
    1) I am getting better with the chipper, but find it a little short. I have ordreed a new one that has a longer shaft and is a little heavier in the head and bigger bounce/ sole.
    2) When one part of my games goes AWOL I am managing to keep on track rather than giving up.

    One Step back
    1) My tee shots continue to be erratic. I spent some time on the practice area after the last game and seem to have sorted the Driver issue. It is and issue related to setup and aim alignment.

We played at Portland this morning in wet conditions. It kept getting wetter, until hole 9 when it became too wet to putt through the water on the green. We retired!

I have been working out on the farm cutting out sweet pittosporum, an invasive weed/tree in SW Victoria. I was late getting to the golf course to play a practice round with Adriano. I started on hole 14. Conditions; blustery wind and a Scottish mist, cool 12 degrees.

    Two step forward
    1) I have mastered the chipper club. It looks old, but it works . 37 degrees loft. I was getting my chips on line to the hole and not too far away.
    2) Hitting approach shots into the wind from around 130-150 m I hit quite a few greens in regulation.

    One step back
Tee shots were a bit erratic today/ I guess I got some practice with punch shots though!

I played at Heywood on Wednesday morning with my son-in-law. The weather was kind and the rain held off until mid-day.
The greens were slower than usual and the fairways slightly soggy. I like the course with its rolling hills and lots of sloping lies to deal with. The rough is rough, which punishes any wild shots. My son-in-law (off 6) got me ( 15) by one point 33 to 32 points.
I can claim that I out drove him twice, even tough he is usually 50 m + longer than me. He mishit two drives and all I had to do was get past the forward tees for bragging rights.

I got a great photo of a large buck kangaroo sunning itself just near the 14th hole tee box. He was reluctant to move.

Arccos is a useful tool for tracking golf stats.

    Two steps’
    1) Arccos measures your shots with each club during a game. Once it has enough data it gives you a ” smart distance” which is your shot distance you hit 70% of the time. The data then shows where you have gaps or convergence of club distance. It can be ego denting though.
    2) It reviews your game in five sections ( tee shots, fairway approach, chipping, sand and putting) The latest App update gives a lot more info. This gives you and idea where to practise.

    One step
    1) It doesn’t work well on Android phones, latest app update needs a recent I- phone with IOS 13, misses recording short putts.

On my last game I used the 44.5 ” Driver and for half the game sprayed it all over the place.
On a practice game yesterday I was using my 45.5 ” Driver and whacked it down the middle 8/9 fairways!

    Two steps forward
    1) My 45.5″ Driver improved during its period solitary confinement in the shed.
    2) Putting improved again when I didn’t try to over think it.

    One step back
I am still unbalanced by a score card in my pocket

Mini Driver ? What loft are you using in mini- Driver and Driver? I was thinking maybe increased loft will help control the side spin issue.

I played 18 hole this morning. Mild wind at the start, but built to gusty 45 k.p.h. Sunny at the start, but cooler as the wind turned to westerly.Score 85.( 6 pars, 11 bogeys, one double) I hit 8/14 fairways ( missed 4 left and two right). Hit 3 GIR and 3 up and downs

    Two steps forward
    1) short game was working well. 34 putts. Chipping was better as the game progressed
    2) fairway misses were not too punishing
    One step back
    1) Approach shots 80% short. Possibly the soft fairways contributed ( no run = longer approach shots and little chance of running onto the green)

I played 18 this morning with my son in law ( off handicap 6) . I hit a round of 83, but suffering a bit now with a sore right leg.

    Two steps forward
    1) I hit 9/14 fairways in the centre. Much improved.
    2) Putting was much better speed wise. 4 of them dropped for 1 putt/ hole

    One step backwards,

    1) chipping has gone to pot distance control wise. With all our practice areas closed to slow the spread of Covid 19 ( we have no cases locally) I miss the opportunity to develop feel / ladder drill stuff.

It is always a bit of catchup as you improve your swing and then have to figure our how much to adjust on course after watching balls flying past the flag

Better than the alternative feeling though

So true. I have been playing the alternative for 3 years.

Then you have the wind factor to consider ( into the wind?, wind assisted shots?, side winds/ do I cut into the right to left wind??? , and vice versa for left to right winds; the joys of coastal Victorian courses!)

I am excited that I am taking a reliable thin divot rather than either picking or fatting the shots. I am even getting a fair distribution of misses long, left and right rather than all short! Still misses, but more GIRs too. All it has taken is playing daily for my daily exercise. My hip and foot are sore, so I need a few days off to recover!

Well I have returned to playing match play with my mate Tony. This lock down we can use the golf course instead of our home grown version of paddock golf. It would seem that I am better at golf course match play than I was at paddock golf.

    Two steps forward

    1) I hit most fairways off the tee. Only one push shot.
    2) My putting has improved. This was an area Tony had me at a disadvantage. I won by 3 holes, but it was neck to neck until hole 6.

    One step back

    1) First to ten wins our home made trophy. I am 7/9 down. No pressure!

A practice round this morning. I wanted to work on my 160 m shot ( which club is best), irons hitting solid contact, Hybrids in the 160-140 m range, tee shots.

    Two steps forward
    1) 2 drivers ( one for draw, one for fade) seems to be working at the moment. The 12 degree is doing well for draw shots and the 10.5 for fades. My feeling is the 10.5 is the more versatile if I go back to one Driver. Being shorter at 44.5 ” it feels easier to control.

    2) After trying a 20 degree six wood today, it was pretty obvious that my existing 4W and 3H offer better options for long approach shots.

    One Step back

    1) I have been trying to get better strike with my irons, more compression of the ball. Now my distances are all inaccurate(10 m short) Oh well, I can live with an improvement in distance.
