I like your stats categories, especially TSIP, which makes more sense that fairways hit in the centre. If you have a clear shot towards the target, that is win in my book.

All I have to do is play like this when in a proper game!

I played this afternoon in sunny but cool conditions with a 20 m headwind from the South.
I started with a well planned and executed par ( isn’t that great when it goes to plan), but upon coming up behind a very slow couple of lady players on hole 2 my game went wrong. After a 5 minute wait for my second shot, my 4W approach shot push right and behind a tree. I had to chip out and chip on for a double bogey. I ended up with 4 pars, 4 bogeys and one double. I am managing to get on the green for three on the par 5 holes, but on one the first put was very long and the second putt hit the edge of then hole and deflected out.

    Two steps forward
    1) I hit most of the fairways off the tee, and the ones I missed, it is only slightly in the left rough. I was thinking” visualization and fee’l before each tee shot. It seemed to work.
    2) Putting was fairly good

    One Step Back
My fairway approach shots at my maximum distance are not accurate enough. I think it is down to me trying to hit the ball hard and losing my form. It makes sense for me to lay up instead and try for a accurate chip shot at the pin. I must lack discipline! It is obviously not a 70% shot.

what distance are your talking about for your approach shots ,150m
how far from the hole are you hitting the approach shots you think are not accurate enough? are you expecting too much…?

as a rule proximity to hole is 10 % of approach distance which is about the pga tour average for player number 250 on money list.
    from.
    160 to 182m =20m
    150m inside 15m
    100m = 10m.
    50m = 5m
so on a course with small greens 30m long by 20 m wide

Do you mean 10% front to back dispersion or lateral , or both?

Approach shots for me 170-150 m out I am hoping to get the ball within chipping distance 10-20 m .
Inside 130 m I am hoping to hit the green somewhere, or within 10 m.of the green.

I played like an old man at the Glenelg Vets at Casterton. Scored 96 / 27 points with three wipes. Having signed up 50 or so members before the game, and no practice my expectation were low.

I had been playing in Mt. Gambier over the weekend with my mate from Adelaide. He is a learner and it tends to be a slow-ish game. It should have prepared me for the Vets, because we were stuck behind the slowest group in the field. Oh wel,. the weather was nice and warm ( too hot actually) with just a little breeze to take the edge off the sun.

My tee shots were erratic. I was stubborn and should have set up for my swing of the day, but instead I pushed a lot of the shots to the right on the first 9. It got better ( they moved left), but the damage was done early. My iron and hybrid shots got me close and my short game was not all that bad.

    I had fun.

Just north of Cavendish on the highway to Horsham is a nice little 9 hole sand scrape course called the Mooralla Golf Club. The scenery is a fantastic view of the west side of the Grampians. The fairways are lined with majestic old red gum trees. For a green fee of $5 it is a cheap outing , if you are in the area.

Well if you are in the single figure league now Weeti, time to trade that Telescope for something a bit more close up. A magnifying glass maybe?

Well I played solo today with a mask ( mostly) when near the club house or the boundaries of the course. it seems a little silly wearing one when no-one is around.

It was a case of “who is this masked golfer”, when in near perfect conditions I scored in the low 80s. Sunshine, 20 degrees, light wind and a firming course conditions. The greens were freshly mown and rolled. I have to admit to carrying 15 clubs though. I wanted to test whether or not I was getting any benefit with using the chipper club, so I duplicated a few scenarios using the 8i and the chipper. Answer; My SL 8 i is better for the delicate, close to the green shots. I put one chip in for a birdie to emphasize it.

Today I kept the tee shots mainly on the fairway ( 8/14) and those I missed, only two needed to be punched out from the right. I was happy with my draw shaped tee shots. Not so much with attempted fades. I was getting too much spin. I will revert back to my previous method, which gave either a long pull shot shape or a slight draw tail. It seemed more controllable.

    Two steps forward
    1) one birdie, 8 pars,. 8 bogeys and one double bogey. Better chipping overall and partial iron shots were hitting the greens.
    2) better control of direction on my fairway shots.

    One step back
    1) three 3 putts again. It is not so much that my lag putts are poor, but more that I just missed the the second putt three times. Misreading the slope or pace maybe.

Anyway a great day for golf.

Today was a much better performance.i payed to my handicap ( 15) . I hit 6 GIR, but made few up and downs.

    Two steps forward.

    1) tee shots were generally hitting the fairways, with reasonable distance.
    2) Fairway shots with Hybrids and 4 wood went well when I got onto them. I did overuse the 4W though in less than ideal lies.
    3) The putter was way better 17 by two putts and one one putt( it was a good one !)
    4) I used my distance chart to good effect to chip/pitch the ball onto the green.

    One step back
    1) I thinned a few iron shots and went through the greens as a result.
    2) I found out that the chipper isn’t much good in poor lies ( tufty grass) it chunks!

Today I played like a chump. Drizzly rain . Nothing seemed to be working well. Score 98. 49/49 for 25 points.

My tee shots wee not that bad, some ended up too far left, some a bit right but in play still. Tee shot distance was better than usual.

They are about all the positives I can glean from a mediocre performance.

Under clubbing cost me two shots
Poor direction with my Hybrid 3 shots
    Putting 5 shots
    Tee shots off fairway 3
    Poor strike 6 shots.
That is enough for backward steps.

    Tomorrow is another day!

I had a hit at Portland( my home course) this afternoon in glorious sunshine and light winds.

I had been playing with my wife’s clubs while we were away and just wanted a hit out to get back into the groove with my own sticks. I managed to hit the first few tee shots with the 12 degree driver rather high, but the tee shots were back in control by hole #3. I scored a few bogeys on the par 4s at first, but hit par on 3,&7 ( par 5’s) and 4 and 9. I decided to keep going and do the back nine, hitting most of the fairways. I was happy with that.

I am still not all that happy with my chipper’s accuracy, so I spent some time on that club on hole 18 after I finished the game. I think I have the chipper sorted now. Tomorrow’s game with my son-in-law will indicate if I really have improved.

Our Spring carnival events are being run. I am playing a 4BBB game on Friday. It should be fun.

My wife and I travelled to Mooralla golf club on the west side of the Grampians, near Cavendish. it is a pretty little 9 hole sand scrape course, lined with massive red gums. The wind was strong and gusty. We managed about 4 holes until a massive red gum exploded to the ground. The earth moved alright! We decided to quit while we were ahead. Green fees were only $5. It is well worth a visit if you are ever over that way.

After a wet and windy night , a bike ride around the lake and a climb up around a local waterfall, I got time for a quick 9 holes at Beaufort this afternoon.
The conditions were a bit softer and much windier than yesterday. i started out playing Bogey golf on holes 1-3 and did the same on holes 7-9. In between I got excited when I hit two pars on the par 5 fourth and fifth holes ( 454m & 448 m ) , but the number one hole on index par 4, 6th hole at 415 m got the better of me. My third shot finished just short of the green, but my chip went a bit far through, making for a long putt back. I missed, just! Oh well, one double bogey, 2 pars and 6 bogeys for a 43 wasn’t bad.

I thought about doing the back 9. In fact , I started doing 10 and 11 ( bogeys) but it was getting too cold for comfort. Last time I played this course I struggled to reach the dogleg bend on 11. This time I got there no problem.

    Two steps forward
    1) I am getting some good driver shots. In play and roughly where I aimed them.
    2) I was scoring fairly well just using just a Driver, 22 hybrid, 7,PW, SW, LW , chipper & putter. I had to manufacture a few partial shots.

    One step back

I still occasionally push a tee shot off to the right. I just seem to get my aim/alignment wrong. The ball goes where I was aiming it.

I had a hit at Beaufort yesterday. I was having fun in the warm quiet conditions. The fairways were well grassed, but greens a bit rough and slow. I got a good drenching on the 6th green when the sprinklers got me in the back. It was a good excuse for a 3 putt I guess. My first putt was on a good line but stopped short in the watery surface. My wife joined me on the 7th hole, hitting a few shots with her 7 iron using a tee. She is getting better ball flight and even managed a good hybrid and Driver shot off the tee. She was quite excited to see the Driver shot get off the ground. After 9 holes I was happy to retire and enjoy a cold Coopers Session Ale.

I played at the St. Arnaud Country Club course over the last 2 days. The name is grander than this central Victorian course deserves, but at $10 per round it was a bit of fun. The fairways are not irrigated a lot and as a result there are bare patches as the spring rains diminish. The grass is a mix of clover and rye grass (i.e. mown pasture) and the sand scrape greens are small and hard. The fairways were wider and long, probably the only defence of the course ( no huge trees, bunkers, not much shape in the design of most holes)

Positives were that I was hitting my tee shots 20-30 m further than I do at my home course. It was fun watching the ball hit the ground, bounce and keep going. Well it was fun up until one ran into the dam. I was getting into quite a pattern of play. Driver, 7 wood, chipper and putter once on the sand scrape. Hitting the sand scrape full lob is not productive, the ball “super balls” off 20-30 m away. Being that I rarely hit a green anyway, my game should be suited to scrapes courses. My secret weapon was the Arc Master putter. I lined the ball up at the hole and struck a firm shot at the desired path along the previously smoothed sand runway. it is not a matter of finesse. I found that my wife’s Cleveland HB Launcher irons worked just fine off the hard lies, something I didn’t expect. I do have a shallow swing path though. I scored in the high 80’s. No snakes and no ball thieving
    crows.

Negatives. After the first 9 I left my SW and LW in the car thinking they were not needed. I found the only bunker on one of the back 9 holes. It was a dirt bunker and hard dirt at that. I ended up putting the ball out sideways and chipping it back onto the scrape. It was probably safer than trying for a chip out with my 60/04 LW.

I had fun and I was the only person on the course for 2 days. Not bad for a course about 200 km north of Melbourne!

I am a happy golfer. During a practice round I seem to have worked out an aiming system for my tee shots that is working in keeping my ball in play. The tee shot had a slight draw shape , but a few faded at the end of the ball flight. On two holes where there is no trouble on the right side, I used a baseball grip and and got a ripper draw shape shot.
