March 8, 2020 at 4:51 am in reply to: 6 things pro golfers do when they practice that amateurs never do #10062
Can break 80Participant1. amateurs hit lots of shots before game and think its practice and hope to find a swing for day with latest on line you tube tip, vs pro’s warm up with swing they have on day.
2. during play amateurs change swings or grip or set up if make 2 bogeys in a row vs Pro says oh well that what swing I have, let me score as well as I can today.
3 during play Pro’s only hit at 70 % power vs amateurs hit as hard 110 % as they can on every shot
4 pro;s have a game plan for the course vs Amateurs who just hit and then complain if they hit into fairway bunker
5 Pro’s aim for middle of green and play away from trouble vs Amateurs aim at pin and bring trouble into play
6 After game amateurs hit bar or go home, vs Pro’s after the game practice what ddint work for them

Did manage to get my practice in this week with a visit to the range (albeit after the poor performance on Saturday). I was working on some drills from the Strike Plan, and in particular practicing hitting bad/not centred shots. So hit 10 out of the toe deliberately then similar number out of the heel and so on.
Made for some mild embarrasment at the range hitting shanks and so on. I did find that when I was trying to hit it out of the heel I was actually striking it pretty well, which is weird particularly as I had a couple of half shanks on Saturday in my forgettable round. I did enjoy having particular things to work on at the range as I tend to find hitting balls pretty boring.
Then I went to the putting green to finish off the last couple of items from my level one putting challenge. I had passed the first four sets of drills even though I still had some items left in the fourth set. So I finished those up, and then I just had two drills of lag putting, with the pass requirement to leave 70% of the putts from 35 and 45 feet within 3 feet of the hole. I got 8 out of 10 from 35 feet, and then totally tanked the 45 feet drill, leaving me two putts outside the standard.
It was an interesting exercise in putting under pressure, cause I had in my mind the whole time the response. But it was illustrative that my lag putting from long distance is pretty poor, when compared with my general putting. And that actually does show up in my game – mainly by leaving long putts short. So I have to repeat the level 1 drill, but my plan for this next week is to try and get through the level 1 chipping challenge and see how I measure up there.
Well done Deege what I really like is the practice plan.
most golfers dont practice to a plan, they just beat hundreds of balls at driving range hoping to find the Zen factor or magic move.
keep up good work.
when you play dont worry about end score, focus on your process which you seem to be doing better now, I read a few rounds back where your score was bad but process was good.
keep focused.

I get it out there, baby.
That is GPS validated folks
And it handed me one of life’s greatest moments – getting to see the Goldman run after his ball to try and hit it before we could measure it

That happened at a BHIC as well, but I got the laser measurement.
With my fading memory, I’ve forgotten who the unfortunate player was.A number of hall of shame shots from the BHIC days (what ever happened to this prestigious tournament ?).
Robnewys shot between legs into the garden bed next to tee still remains the leader
closely followed by Fe Mick same shot a year later.

at least The SPAM level is lower here on this site.

Can break 80ParticipantIt used to be simple. All you needed was your GA index and the slope, a quick calc and you have your playing ‘cap.
From the end of Jan, you will also need the scratch rating and the par. In addition, they have moved the 7% discount from your index to the aforementioned playing ‘cap.
I might have to knock up a little app for that.
Its going to be interesting at a club like yours OB where the ACR is 70 and Par is 72.

Can break 80ParticipantMM (stroke/putting) with Olinda GC @ Beacy (Hills front, Lakes) yesterday.
Started slowly with 6 stab points on opening 6 holes, then 9 points on next 3.
Once we hit the Lakes, shit happened. I had a Bo Derek on hole 20 and followed that with a nasty dozen on hole 22 (2 into the drink).
End result was a nett 89 off 16: played to 25.Today was the Garfield Plate, again playing off 16.
Highlights: no wipes, no 3-putts.
Lowlights: no 3-points, heaps of 1-points, total 26 points. As for finding a better home for this thread, none of the others seem any more relevant. I’ve asked madam and await a response.
Looks like Olinda GC should implement the double par pick up for monthly medal.
that would have saved you at least 5 shots.1 user liked this post.
Can break 80ParticipantThe start of a New Year brings to a close what was to be achieved by the 31/12/19. Some made it to the set goal, some got real close and others, well they tried. The thing is, you set the goal because you thought it was achievable, lets see if it is. An updated list as of the 1/1/20 with a goal point at 31/3/20 and your final handicap goal for 30/6/20. If the below is wrong, then adjust accordingly and keep on trackin. Feel free to add your name to the list and jump on the train if you are not already there.
