Not being able to play this week due to carts banned due to wet weather, I was keen for a hit today. The weather forecast indicated there’d be diabolically bad weather. The storms came near but headed off to Melb.
Plenty of vacancies on course but stage 3 restrictions mean playing with masks on, in pairs and no comps.
So we had a ‘for handicap only’ round. I had only 2 pars, 8 bogeys, and 8 doubles or worse. 25 points.
It was quite windy but barely a few drops of rain. That’s better than not playing.

Having 8 double bogey is worse than not playing.

Played the new Yellow version for 3 holes last Sunday.
nice click off the tee shots, and irons,
greens where we played were soft and bumpy, so its hard to judge a ball short game performance, but lets just say the ball was too good for that type of green.
I ended up playing another 3 holes with a GOKER flower ball perfect ball for those greens.

The new trail balls now get 6 weeks virus leave, before the next on course test.
I will be able to evaluate on putting matt in lounge, and 20m chips in back yard.

Playing in swirling winds of 50-60 k.p.h. and hail isn’t a lot of fun.

Two steps forward
1) My iron approach shots were reasonably good shape wise and I hit the back of the greens a few times when I clubbed up to make sure I hit the green.
2) I managed to keep a lot of shots low and out of the wind.

One step back

1) 4 by three putts. plus several botched tee shots.

well n the way to the holy grail of 80. well done.
now how to get there.

Steps to move forward
players who consistently break 80 rarely 3 putt.
1.more focus on distance control drills with putting, to avoid the 3 and 4 putts.
practice drill from 5m 10m, 15m, aim is to putt ball inside 1m (1 putter length) on all first putts from these distances. ie learn to 2 putt from these distances.

2. chip around with green with less loft, a PW. 8I or hybrid will cover most shots

step which will hold you back
1.too much focus has been on distance with clubs,( listening to much to Across)
2. too many DBogeys from aggressive play.

keep up the good golf

does anyone know if green keepers are still allowed to work at the greater Melbourne contaminated zone courses..
green keeping is not really really essential service, and I know last time, clubs had to battle to retain the courses.
not mentioned anywhere, but then again haven’t heard clubs screaming.

10 Double bogeys is a lot.
lucky it want a par round or you might have been minus 15.

If you had a net 81 and came 105th, what score was the playa at 164. ?

Has to be a creative alternative way to do the tournament, as real possibility we might be like this for next 2 years.

Madam there is no reason why you could not still run the dinner on line via zoom with everyone getting uber eats in and drinking wine or beer until the zoom connection cuts off.
we still could have the partner draw for the virtual round next day.
it would certainly keep cost down.

to determine the national championship when we play again have each state to run an OOM on same day, and send scores into head quarters for compiling.
or
2) all go to local X golf centre and play the two courses and submit scores.

Today I played 9 holes at my home and scored 43 strokes; no 3 putts!

Two steps forward
1) reliable draw shapes off the tee hit 7/9 fairways
2) putting close to the pin with putt#1

One step back
1) having the confidence to trust the tee shot shape will work and aim left or right of centre and allow the ball to return to centre. Both missed fairways were when I went down the centre and the ball turned into the rough.

good playing.
just wondering why is missing fwy in left or right rough a step back.?
were you still able to make a par or bogey from the tee shots which landed in the rough. if a bogey not a problem take that and go to the next hole or are you saying landing in rough cost you a double bogey.from unplayable lie.? then might be problem,

a guy from down your way a Marc Leishman only hits on average 52 % of fairways.= 7/14, which is what you hit at heywood.
Jim Furyk one of best ball strikers ever, hits only 76% = 10.5 fwys,
so looks like you are finding fwy more than these guys so well done.probably dont need to work on your driver much more.

7/9 fairways means you hit every fwy except par 3’s.

I played a social game with 3 other players this morning. Fine, but cool and a heavy dew.

Two steps forward
1) I hit a 43 for 9 holes .
2) I found a ball I really like . Snell MTB-X.

One step back
1) I over did the side spin on my 2H and one Driver shot= two double bogeys. I push faded a few tee shots still.

I would say 43 with 2 double bogeys is a step forward not back. so what if you hit two slices, that could just be you on the day, no need to race out and make major modifications to your swing just because two shots go astray, when the day before you hit lovely draw shots.
You are not going to hit every drive perfectly, even PGA tour players miss fwys off tee.at best they hit 75 % fairways.
stick with the process.
more the thing to look to really improve is why the Double bogeys. ?
so you hit into trees and unless completely unplayable, chip out safely, hit 3rd shot on and 2 putt.

Have a fitting with current coach by al means as he knows your swing and what he is trying to get you to do, but well worth a visit to see golfguy to compare notes before you make purchase decision.
Golfguy will give you a good fitting experience and will also provide you with information and knowledge about what you need in your clubs compared to most “fitters” who lets be honest are interested in selling clubs and will fit you into the “club of the day or only latest model..
Golfguy can also check your existing clubs as may also be able to modify to better fit. your current slice might be due to the shaft flex. A correct fitted shaft in your current driver head might be better and cheaper than paying $800 plus for an OEM brand that doesn’t meet needs. BUT be guided by his advice.

And playing poorly in the middle part too.

And misreading the lie of the shot, as in how the ball is sitting on the ground? Like, I was sure it was on grass and not this concrete cart path before i hit and I should have let go of the club after that bad shot?
Or does he mean the read of the putt?

assess lie, means is what it says do you assess the lie, very few shots re played from flat lies like at range, is lie up hill, down hill, soft and fluffy, sitting on thin grass., also means in bunkers.
I know not paying attention to this factor of lie has cost me heaps of stfd points in past.

8) Holding on to bad shots? Emotionally, does he mean?

10) starting poorly; That would be my poor tee shots, or does he mean starting the game poorly. I do that too often, taking a few holes to warm up. Possibly trying to whack them too hard and forgetting to watch the ball is my problem ( in golf)

For me 1,5,7 are things that I do often.

8 emotionally, how many times do people hit a bad shot or have an out and think I am playing so bad or fiddle with swing or get ngry on next two tee shots.

10 starting off poorly, means exactly that, not being prepared to play no warm up or practice putt, then 3 putt first 3 holes etc and or starting with bad holes from being to aggressive. start slowly build in ot the round.

Special, from your description of “spitting out low”, I assume you are de-lofting the club considerably and trying to blast the ball out with a large handful of sand. While that can be made to work, it has its problems.
I’d recommend Phil Mickelson’s bunker CD for good guidance.

You haven’t t told us anything about the loft and bounce angle of the club you usually use and about the consistency and texture of the sand.

I try keep the face open and hands central, i use a 60 degree for sand shots..

I think it is probably taking too much sand.. the bunkers are reasonably soft and deep with sand.. wetter weather make them a bit more condensed and harder to get under however.. If i miss i do one of 2 things… scoot through the sand and thin the ball out or take too much sand and it doesn’t get out.

The longer further back ones I tend to take a larger swing that takes way more sand where as the closer ones I have a comfortable tempo and it gets out ok.

Talk with your coach and learn the correct technique, which is same as hitting over a bunker.
As Old bogey says talk with your coach about the bounce on your wedge.
do you have a 56 deg with 10 to 12 deg bounce will hit ball higher out of soft sand than a 60 deg which it sound like you are digging in.
at Cranbourne the bunkers are deep, so try and avoid them.

I’ve got a sand wedge but I don’t really know anything about bounce so no idea… I’ll try the SW see if i feel any better with it.. it’s really just those further back ones that worry me.. sometimes feels it’s about 5 meters or more back that I’ve gotta lift it, carry it, then stop it which is the shot I find intimidating at the moment.

You are right, they are deep and everywhere and it’s probably the difference on a lot of holes if I just miss slightly I find myself in one and under real pressure to stay in the hole.. The good news is I’m making it up there to them (which earlier wasn’t always the case) and if I improve marginally I’ll start missing them and make more pars!

If you dont understand bounce angle on SW and Lob wedges, go to your coach and have a lesson where he explains what bounce is and how to use it on wedge shots including lobs over bunkers and including sand shots and hitting off hard pan lies.

this will save you more shots quicker than trying to fix your slice. Xrmans suggestion is a good one, hit short of bunkers until you can play out of them.
Another way to think about it is, you can break 90 if you can play bunkers and pitches even if your slice your irons and tee shots.
But its going to be very difficult to break 90 if you cannot pitch over bunkers or get out of bunkers first time every time.
