Can break 80ParticipantAnother BIG mistake that high handicappers make is they tend to not take golf lessons, rather they watch the editors cut highlights of PGA tournaments see players hit fantastic shots and then go on You tube.for the newest and latest swing tips and “secrets” to perfect the same shot them selves..
I regularly play with an 18 marker, who is constantly trying a different swing thought he saw on You tube in very game we play.
what happens is, he walks around the course with a head full of swing thoughts and swing positions trying to hit perfect golf shots rather than playing the game of golf.Low markers, as a rule tend to take face to face lessons and / or build a long term relationship with a pro /coach, who gives them drills to develop new skills, which are specific to the student.
The advantage of having some one look at swing is because if a player slices, the player thinks he slice because he doesnt transfer his weight correctly, when really the pro will pick up that player is poorly aligned at set up.A really good golf coach will help his playa lower their scores and play better golf without necessarily changing their golf swing because he or she knows players game and or works more with the player on the course not on the range. This on course instruction and interaction is invaluable way to learn new skills and hitting shots in actual playing situations and thus building shot repertoire for playa.

Can break 80Participant#4 above. That’s me!
Is it. ????? dont get cause and effect mixed up.
If hit aggressive on wrong start line ball wont go in.
you say that are 3 putting because missing short putts from 1 m then according to my coach it due to 1 of 5 reasons.
a) not reading correctly (practice NSEW drill and count how many in out of 10)(on course if miss one from say west of hole hit from other side of hole and hit same putt again.this will show break).
b) not aiming putter face correctly (most golfers aim too far right)(if aim too far right ball will die to right giving impression of not hitting hard enough)(use string drill) on course take address, move behind putter, adjust face
c) not starting ball on correct start line (face control)
d) not speed control (inconsistent hit on putter face)
e) poor pre shot routine on putting.
Not saying i am a perfect putter, I am not, but to get better I need to do more work on all 5 parts of putting game, especially a,b and d)

Can break 80Participantjust passing on observations of mistake I see High Handicappers make.
1 in a typical round of golf a high handicap player will have more 3 putts than 1 putts= most high markers I play with have 38 to 40 plus putts. One high handicapper I know regularly has 40 to 42 putts and says often its the fault of greens being too slow or too fast when really the main one reason for poor putting is he has no speed control.on putts.(but never practice putting either)
2 High handicappers use too much loft on chip shots = how many times from 10 m off green do you see a player grab the LW, and try to hit the Phil flop. Result chunk 2ft in front or belly over back, high markers should use a club such as hybrid or 8 iron for chipping.
3 Dont know what the bounce is on a SW or how to use bounce to get out of bunkers= high handicappers usually leave in sand or hit over back, followed by an expletive which often blames the sand as too hard or not enough sand in bunkers.
4. Have high expectations about the result= have a day where first two or three tee shots they hit nice shots which fade into RHS rough and then proceed to fiddle with swing having Doubles and wipes all way round course in order to get the perfect shot up last hole.. Low markers dont hit perfect shots either, but they learn to put a score together with the game they have on day
5. High handicapper play Pro V’s/. How do we know this to be true, because one always finds at least 1 ProV’s in bushes and not a lot of low marker go in the bushes. High Markers I talk to think that if they play a premium tour ball their game will improve, especially short game as they will be able to get more spin around the greens(see mistake number 2) and they feel they don’t putt as well with other balls (mistake number 1).

Can break 80ParticipantAnother stab at Warra ‘for handicap only’.
Played crap, something like 27 points. All flags move south a notch.By the way, it was fabulous golf weather, I really have no excuse.
Enjoy the game.
even if we move from cell 4 to cell 3 it may mean golf in 2’s.
lets hope Golf Australia are talking to Dan and his ministers and pushing for golfers to get out again
hope common sense prevails this time.

Once we get to Grand final Dan will start easing off, as people will just do BBQ’s and his once loyal subjects will resent him even more for not allowing this event in Melbourne, even more so if final is between its 2 Melbourne clubsMelbourne Cup day Dan wants the revenue to state from gambling from this event to pay for all the waste.
Once hot weather comes people will go to the beach regardless of curfew or police fines. Can you imagine what its going to be like swimming at beach with masks on..
.We run campaigns to stop plastic bags cause it might hurt the fish, can you imagine how many face masks there will floating at beach.Lets see if same group campaign against masks at beach.Opening at end of October will allow retailers to build stock for Christmas shopping
Chairman Dan will step down early in new year to give labor party a chance at a new leader so that when we get to next election Victorian voters will have forgotten

Can break 80ParticipantAnother stab ‘for handicap only’ day today.
Glorious golf weather but you wouldn’t know that looking at my score.
I actually had a good 9 hole score. Pity it took me 18 holes to rack that up. 12 & 12 for 24 points. My only 3-point was the last hole. I’ve hardly played in the last fortnight due to wet weather and carts not being allowed. My game has gone to crap.Bring on spring.
Commiserations to the Melb metro inmates.
I dont get why you would put a card in for handicap only, when weather is crap and its not a comp(unless its to donate comp fee to club).
You are already at your anchor and so if play bad it only gives negative thoughts. At least you can still play.
All of us in the Metro prison wont be out on course until at least cup day in November, so Dancer and i might get a game with you before Christmas.

Can break 80ParticipantI competed in the Denby U.K. Rotary Club’s fund raising golf competition today. Rotarians world wide can pay $20 to enter and prizes are offered for the best 4 person team score.
Two steps forward
1) 8 pars
2) Hit 7/14 fairways in the middle and only two pitch out sideways / punch out episodes on the others. One Step back
1) three holes with three putts! Two of which were short putts that I tried to steer in , rather than hit it firmly enough to take the break out of the equation.]How long are the short putts say you are missing.?
1 grip from hole
1/2 putter
1 putter
2 putters.Did you miss Right or left.
when you “steered them in” it means you either
1) de accelerated putter head and ball broke more than you thought.
2) under read the amount of break and ball stayed straight on the line.

just noticed that the model above has a milled face. Original versions used by Palmer didnt have milled face
Can break 80ParticipantOn a tree lined tight course, I would be tempted to use both and drop my 60 degree LW.
If I had to choose only one, I would use the fade Driver at my local course. At Heywood, I would use the draw shape Driver.Thats a good move, chance the clubs in set make up to suit course you are playing. That’s the way of the playa.
maybe use 60 deg in summer when ground is harder or when need a high floater over a bunker.
speaking of bunkers what club do you use from bunkers, although I see your course doesn’t have many bunkers to get out of,
Can break 80Participant5?
I’m just speculating.
3.5 shots maybe???
I adjusted the Nike Driver today and played the equivalent of 36 holes this morning, comparing how I scored teeing off with a draw shot and fade, using two Drivers. Score was much the same.
Two steps forward
1) The Nike Driver performed really well today, giving reasonable distance and control. The shots were either straight or with a little fade. nothing fading out too far right.
2) I worked out how to get good gapping distances between my 3 hybrids. Hit them harder! I used the hybrids to roll the ball onto the green from just off the verge. It was more reliable than a deft little LW shot. One Step back
1) I can still manage to push some shots off to the right. I found out I wasn’t aiming well. Lack of concentration I guess.-

So will you use the draw driver or fade driver given no advantage score wise.
Can break 80ParticipantHow many strokes did the 5 misses to the right cost you…?
Can break 80ParticipantA quick update, well not quick really, as it’s actually more like a year’s worth of waiting ……..
Having had to wait several months for my driver to arrive, then 8 months for my irons to be made, another 3 months for my wedges to be completed, I can now top that lot, with the wait I have just endured.
A good long while ago I asked our Wilson Rep about ordering in a putter for me. Now this isn’t any old putter, it is in fact the reincarnation of Wilson’s famous 8802 putter …… and extreme toe hang putter, used and designed originally by Arnold Palmer way back in the early 60’s.
Wilson re-released a modern version of this classic putter design 50 years later in 2014, and so after trying out a right handed version which we’d ordered for the shop, I was after one for myself.
So a little over a year and half ago now, I put in my request. Unfortunately, according to our Wilson Rep, they didn’t make it in left handed I was told.
Fast forward a few months later, and imagine my surprise when one day I spotted a left handed one on ebay that was up for sale in the US.
So, armed with a photo of said left handed putter I showed the Wilson Rep the next time he came in. He said he’d find out for me, and a month later he informed me that for me to get a lefty into the country we’d have to order in 50 of them from the U.S. .(so that wasn’t going to happen).
By then of course, the one on the bay of e had long since gone. Since my initial inquiry, I’d been using the right handed one in the shop to practice my putting with whenever the place was quiet, and I really loved the feel of it.
As soon as my “practice putter” sold, I would immediately order in another one, and I reckon I’ve sold half a dozen of them over the duration.
So ……. it wasn’t until June this year that another one appeared on the bay of e, over in the US of A …… and it was a putter that had only been used on the practice green and not in a round, so it was pretty much pristine.
The bidding was pretty keen over the next few days, but with a large bid at 6:15am one Sunday morning back in June ….. I did secure it.
Therein has followed yet another long wait, of a month and a half for it to actually turn up, (thanks covid19) but just the other day, there was finally ……….. a nice parcel leaning by the front door.
It is as described, in pristine condition, and the leftie version feels just as silky smooth as the right handed version on my putting carpet out in the garage.
Now all I need though is access to an actual golf course at some stage to give it a real test.
And as they say ……… good things come to those that wait ……..
a work of art.
good putting days ahead.
Interesting most golf stores dont sell them because the average joe golfa doesn’t use one because of perceived small sweet spot.I used to have one as a kid and for reasons not known I got rid of it, OH wish i should have kept it.
Can break 80ParticipantI was thinking that getting short sided in situation where I have to get up over a steep verge to a close pin position and not much roll out on the green to another bunker or steep verge on the other side, would require a high chip with the LW.
When it works it is great, but I found it either didn’t go far enough ( too much finesse) or hit near the pin with too little spin and rolled off. Normally I do use lower loft bump and run shots, but I was trying to get a handle on the LW. Tried and failed. if in doubt I have been running that shot up with my single length hybrid using a putting style stroke. A poor shot is better than the LW poor shot.understand
When trying the lob it pitch shot, the technique is a little different and precision needed more.
Maybe find a couple vids on the types of shots and see it that may help you get more confidence in the shot.
Try a hardpan lie over a bunker to short side pin. With water over green!! 🙂
No thanks! I would probably chip sideways, so I had more green to run the ball up to the pin. Two shots for sure, versus how many for the hero shot method? Last time I tried the hero shot I went from one bunker into the opposite bunker and back again. Luckily I was playing solo, so no witnesses.
I watched a video of Golf Sidekick having a lesson for the Lob shot in Malaysia. The lady coach was very informative.
agree with madam
if you practice the lob shot shot form off hardpan, you will learn to use the bounce angle on the SW or LW to good effect,
then sand shots and soft fluffy lies will be easy.
if practice hard to play easy
Can break 80ParticipantAny news on what Melbourne clubs are doing to support members, who have lost about 3 months playing time this year to this virus thing..
I have heard of some clubs considering a rebate,
Can break 80ParticipantI broke 80 for the first time today. I am one happy golfer!
Two steps forward
1) I broke 80
2) I putted really well today
One step back
1) I am still trying to master my new Driver to get consistent fade shots off the tee. They are either not fading, or too much.Wow
well done you have achieved something which very few players get to experience, the magic number.
enjoy your moment.there are Not many steps back if you can break 80.
think what you meant to say is you managed to find a way to score even when driver didn’t do as well as you liked.
but thats a positive not a negative.
There will be days to come when you will hit driver well and crisp irons in and putter wont work and wont score as well.
good golf -
