UpninParticipantList of things to do on a day off.
1. Sort out what to wear in 3 week’s time.I have option 1 and option 2a and option 2b.
Come at me with your thoughtsI’m conscious of the standard of dress code and rightful expectations of being well attired, so I think I have already made my decision. I’m still keen for input from a couple of you whose opinion I respect.
Ready to!
Go for Option 3 and wear the bedspread.
Are you thinking tailored into a new shirt and pants ensemble or run with a toga-like get up?
Toga would be fetching. You’ll be a hit with a couple of our Members I could nominate.

UpninParticipantI reckon option 2 for sure. You don’t want to turn up shy and retiring – you would feel beige all day. Be true to yourself.
Beige……ah yes, brings to mind the difference between a prostitute, a lover and a wife. The prostitute thinks faster, faster, the lover thinks slower, slower, and the wife thinks beige……I think I’ll paint the ceiling beige.

WeetbixParticipantPlayed Oxley with Brisbane Fairways today off 11 – stroke round.
The rain on Friday night was torrential so we weren’t sure we would get a game in. But with only a few showers Saturday the course actually came up really well, with the greens running well and the fairways mostly fine. Got a few chunks of mud on some shots but no complaints at all.
Started poorly with some really bad punch shots from the trees on 2 which led to a triple on the short par 5 which was my worst score of the day and one of two wipes. Followed that with a double bogey wipe on 3 after a terrible 8i on the par 5 (lucky double as my chip shot rolled through a bunker. So with the bogie on the 1st that had me 6 over after 3, off 11 – not looking good.
But things improved after that and managed to finish the front 9 over and then birided 10 to be 8 over. Went on a run of 4 pars in a row to start the back with 5 3 pointers in a row which made up for my 14 point front.
Then stumbled a bit to finish double par bogey bogey but not too bad so finished 3 over on the back and 22 points.
So ended up 84 net 73 – 1 over – and 36 points which was good enough for 4th out of 33 comp players today.
Wynnum Open next Sunday so hopefully can continue the 10 to 14 form!

WeetbixParticipant8/14 fairway – overall drove the ball well today and had no dropped shots off the tee – although a pop up on 2 led to a triple and even if my first punch was good it would have left a long shot for a GIR on the short par 5, and a couple others left challenging shots with tree trouble that led to a double and a bogie.
6 GIR – this was disappointing as I missed some very gettable greens with short irons and wedges. And the bunkers were GUR and often full of water so that left some very short sided chips over bunkers. Dropped 4 shots with poor approaches that left me badly short sided or with no shot
– Fat 8i on 3 well short and amongst trees
– Pulled 9i into a bunker on 8
– PW hit a tree I was trying to fade around on 15
– Pushed LW behind a bunker on 18 (really bad shot)5/13 up and downs – 6 shots dropped plus missed a birdie. Not terrible apart from a couple of thin LW lob attempts over bunkers. A couple more down would have been pretty much where I need to be – better than 50%
– 1/2 Texas
– 2/4 8 iron chips
– 1/4 PW chips
– 0/3 LW lobs
– 1/1 LW splash31 putts – 1 3 putts – but also made some good second putts and up and down putts in the 3-6 ft range. Not unhappy at all with the putter.
The punch shots on 2 were the only really shocking shots, and the 2 thin lob wedge chips. Hopefully can keep the driver going well and get the short irons and wedge approaches going.

BumpunRunParticipantI found these in a stack of old photos in the shed last night.
I can’t remember what year it was and I probably could find out if I bothered, but I took these when I was at the Australian PGA

BumpunRunParticipantThe fourth is something like 125m to the front all the way up to 160m to the back.
Club selection will be key here, with the ‘best’ miss being short left.Five is driver as long on the topside of the fairway as possible. The best line in is from the bunker, but that is lower and not really actually that much better than on the topside. That will leave something like 130odd to the front, plus the length to the pin. Short may well be the best miss here, but if I have 8 iron I don’t want to miss anyway.
6th is hybrid on the advice from Upnin, there isn’t a great benefit in taking on the central bunker. Hybrid here will leave lob wedge to whatever length the pin is on.
The 16th, shown on the top of those holes is a great one, the temptation here is to try and rip it around close to the tree for a shorter shot in, but the way this funky green has the canyon through the guts of it running across, you want to be coming into is as straight as possible. This green will cost me some additional shots

When you’re playing the third, pay particular attention to the wind direction, as it will dictate the teeshot on four. There can often be two clubs difference, and it’s not always apparent standing on the tee as the trees left act as a buffer to the teeing ground. Unless it is a strong south-easterly wind, you will need to shape a shot to this green. Greenside bunkers are preferable to anything wider, and yes, short left makes for an easier recovery usually with a putter. It is a big green though, and therefore should not be a real challenge to a player of your obvious talent
Doubt there’ll be much run on the fifth when we play, and unless it’s straight down breeze, driver down the right or three wood down the left are the options. Don’t quite agree with your summation about the better line in – I think left is far better although potentially not a clear view due the height of the big bunker. If you can smash one level right or even past then you’ll only be hitting wedge.
Agree with you on the tee shot for six. Just remember the green is like concrete and runs away, and anything short will not bounce on. If the pin is front left good luck – as stupid a pin placement as you’ll ever see (like front right on the fourteenth).
You lost me there for a moment going to the sixteenth. The line is driver straight at the first right hand bunker which will give you the best line in, no matter the flag location. A hooked drive will generally roll past the large fig left leaving just a PW to 8 iron depending on whether the flag is front or back. As for Clayton’s Crack, it would be a fairer design with holding bent greens for mere mortals who are hitting far more than wedges. The actual landing zone on the front of this green is about three metres wide. Miss left and you’ll most likely be putting, as what little grass is there grows straight into you making for a very difficult chip. Miss right and your ball will always roll into the longer rough on that side which makes for a difficult recovery to a hard green, and a bump and run attempt is hard to judge due to the greenside grass on that side having a lot more cushion. A good drive makes for a much easier second and a definite birdie chance.
By this hole, you are out of ‘cap anyhow…….:)

WeetbixParticipantPlayed at Wantima today – first game off the new WHS and I have gone up to 11.3 and was off 12
Wantima was in excellent condition – the greens are really good, a fair speed and rolled beautifully. The rough is brutal as the balls settle down deep and were hard to findIt was the BF Matchplay first round so the competition for those of us who weren’t in MP it was a competition of 12 – but I managed to win it by 4 points so that was good. Had 40 for 19 on the front and 41 for 18 on the back for an 11 over and 37 points.
8 pars 9 bogies 1 double
6/14 fairways – drove ok, especially on the front nine. Had to chip out on 18 but otherwise didn’t drop any shots off the tee. A couple that could have been but managed to save them.
3 GIR + 1 after chip out on 18 – not where I want to be at all – thin SW plugged on 7 and hooked a 7i badly on 8 for 2 dropped shots. Missed quite a few by not much, and plenty rolled off. Not too bad.
7/17 up and down – dropped 8 shots here as some were after the dropped shots on 7 and 8 Made 5/9 PW, 3/4 8i (1 after the hook on 8), 0/2 LW (but both were ok shots) and 0/2 LW bunker shots (1 from the plug on 7)
29 putts – couldn’t drop a birdie putt today but putted really well – no complaints at all
My focus today was on that idea of swinging everything together – clubhead, hands and chest all rotating around and back together – which is obviously a feel not a real, but I was very happy with the results today, especially on the short game and putting.
Royal Queensland next weekend which will be nice

Hopefully the forecast rain a week out is inaccurate.
