Great Opening For Mini Men’s Golf
THE Anglican Church Alexandra Hills’ day of introductory golf for Mini Man Shed turned out to be a swinging success, showing great potential for junior golfers at Pacific Golf Club.
Ten young students had the unique opportunity to attend a sponsored golf clinic instructed by club professionals, followed by 9 Holes on the Par 3 Course at the golf club in Carindale.
Grow the Game Central helped sponsor the event in support of junior golf initiatives to grow the game and attract a new generation of golfers, by providing the young men with iseekgolf caps on the scorching day.
After three hours of putting and swinging at the course the children were treated to a prepared BBQ feast back at the church. One of the boys attending the day’s golf clinic stated “I will come back to church next week if this is what happens!”
The event came about following a church 9-hole golf day organised in early 2014 when Alexandra Hills’ church leader, Sarah Jane, realised that many children tried golf for the first time and would normally not have had the opportunity to do so.
The golf initiative, which received overwhelming support by the church council, launched a long line of Mini Man Shed events that have been held monthly ever since. The program has included an array of topics of interest such as bike repairs, lawn mower maintenance, planting a garden bed and how to make Spaghetti Bolognese.
Church Organiser, Brian Grace, said that the Mini Man Shed program is a unique opportunity for nine to 12 year old boys to learn a new life skill, make friends and to have fun in a safe supervised environment.
“Mini Man Shed is filling a need in the community, supported by Alex Hills Anglican Church, where men are stepping up to provide mentoring and the boys are learning new skills,” he said.
The popular event at Pacific Golf Club inaugurated a second golf introductory day earlier this year, including not only Mini Man Shed students, but some eager-to-learn mothers as well. Susan, one of the ladies participating on the day stated, “I have already purchased my own clubs”.
Brian Grace said things have been progressing with the program this year, showing great attendance at a fishing trip to Wellington Point, and with a guarantee to include more golf activities on the ongoing Mini Man Shed yearly planner.
