I am trying to obtain a fairway finder (again). I have given up on the longer shafted 5 Wood idea. It got me the distance I was after ( 180 m) but I lacked control with it, missing left way too often.
After using the Cobra F7 3 Wood yesterday, which hit down the centre of the fairway, I am looking forward to the arrival of a Wilson C300 3 wood ( 14-17 degree). The seller is taking his time in organizing shipment and payment, for reasons unknown to me. Yesterday I obtained a Cobra F7 +Driver head to fit the 44 inch shaft ( Cobra tip fitted) for $100. The plan is to set that at 11 degrees and make it a fade biased tool. We will see which does the job better!

How did you know that OB? Today my Driver worked.
Adriano and I hit off at 7:30 a.m. in the semi gloom and had 13 holes before we had to leave the course for the pennant competition.
We hit a few good ones, a few not so good ones and a few stinkers!
It was fun, mostly. I swapped my 5W for Adriano’s F7 3W and hit some good tee shots with it. I even had the chance to hit his G425 Driver on one hole. It was very nice, but not 200% better than my Cleveland XL Launcher.

I played with two new members, who were playing to establish their handicaps. They were nice young men, strapping tall chaps who could hit the ball a long way. On the odd occasion they hit the fairway, they gained impressive distance. On the other occasions we looked for balls on practically every hole. It was a slow game, but the weather was nice and we were not inconveniencing anyone else, so it was a pleasant game.
My concentration possibly drifted a bit now and then. I could not buy a putt for the first half. They ran up to the hole, or just slid by on a few holes. I score d pars, 7 bogeys and 5 doubles ( 89OTS/ 32 points) . I three putted on hole 4 ( tricky green slope) and 4 putted on hole 6 ( poor method/ but it was always a 3 putt distance), then I failed to escape a bunker on 8 when I tried to roll the ball out with a hybrid only to hit the lip and not roll over ( so near!) and on the 12th I hit my 7w approach shot wide into the scrub.

I am still not happy with my tees shots ( 5 tee shots not to position) , 2 outside 100 m approach shots were poor, two inside 100 m iron shot were duds and 2 putts I should not have missed. I think I need to spend some time on the range with Driver to work out why I am hitting them so poorly.

With my busy lifestyle in retirement , I have been unable to play much golf lately. I was running later for my 8:20 tee off time this morning, then I noticed a flat rear tyre on my ute. I asked my wife to drop me off at the course, but had no time to warm up at all.

The tone of the day was set on the first three holes , scoring 6,6,6 mainly due to mishits. Then I came good with two pars, followed by a bogey, triple bogey and a double bogey.. The greens had been rolled this morning and were playing relatively fast, and I hit q 3 putt on hole seven, then 4 putt on hole 8. I finished the front 9 with a par and 15 points. My tee shot on hole 10 ended up in the dam on the left ,for another double bogey. I haven’t hooked one that well for a while. I followed up with three bogeys and then on 14 I hit a birdie. Then back to bogeys on the rest , except a par on 17. Total 90 OTS/ 33 points. A So So outcome. S I hit some good shots, but too many poor ones and some silly choices.

    Two Steps
    1) Iron approach shots 90-110 m worked
    2) a few good tee shots with Driver and 3Wood

    One step back
My inside 100 m shots were erratic and I took a while to get used to the speed of the putting greens. Lately my misses have been tap in, but today they took off.

    Analysis/ what costs me shots
    1) Poor tee shots to position =4
    2) Poor Approach shots outside 100 m= 6
    3) Inside 100 m + 4
    4) Putts= 4

Baby sitting duties over! I had a chance to try out the 14 degree high faced 3 wood again. I hit about 10 shots off the tee with it, until I caught up with the last group in the competition. I kept all but one in the fairway. I aimed that one a bit too far left and it ran off the fairway. Distance was 180-190 m . Not bad, but the design is pretty basic by today’s standards. I was also comparing my F9 set at 17 degrees ( standard shaft) and the TS2 7 wood set at 20 degrees. Total distance was almost the same. The TS2 was easier to hit. I am thinking off dropping the F9 and buying a Wilson C300 3 wood for off the tee shots.

    I played today and had a so-so result. I hit 89 OTS/ 34 points. 7 pars, 6 bogeys and 5 DB>.
    Front 9 =46 and back 9= 43

I think my extra strokes could be put into 4 categories
    1) 5 from poor tee shot position.
    2) 4 from poor approach shots outside 100 m
    3) 4 Poor short shots inside 100 m
    4) poor putts =3

I tried the high faced 3 wood off the tee a few times and I think I presented too much loft / poor distance today. I was much better the other day with it. I was disappointed with my 3 Hybrid distance today. The 7 Wood was great at 170 m several times.
The inside 100 m stuff ups were either poor choice of club or poor contact. I managed a 4 putt today. It was always a possible 3 putt, but I missed the uphill 1 m third putt.

Reporting in – no crows have stolen my balls.

A Crow stole my new vision ball at Mt gambier last week. cost me the match

Bring back the shot guns! I use a hunting boomerang and somehow they know I can’t reach much past 60m.
Our way of dealing with the situation is to agree on the approximate position of the theft and drop a new ball there with no penalty.

4 days of no golf and on Pa duty.

I was thinking about my game and identifying my weak points. Lately I have been watching YouTuber ” Not a scratch golfer” . His theory is that to break 80 you need to keep the tee shots in play and be proficient inside 90 m.
After recent changes I am confident that my Driver shots will be in play more often. Time will tell if that is so.

The top end of my bag has some issues that need work. I like the hybrids I am using. The TS2 29 degree works well for the130-145m shots. The Cobra F7 ( 23.5 degree) is good for 150-155m and the Cobra Single length 19 degree is my go to club for any shot I need to manufacture shape and distance. I have been very happy with theTS2 7 Wood set at 21 degrees. I can control it well. Trying to get a fairway finder to fill the gap between my Driver and 7 wood has been an issue for me. I have a Cobra F9 5 Wood with a 44 inch shaft in an attempt achieve a good gap above the 7 Wood . While it isn’t bad , I struggle to control it going left. Lately I have been using the 5W off the tee only.

Today I tried a high faced 14 degree high faced 3 wood off the tee and got some consistent results. Another change I made was to deloft the 7 Wood to 20 degrees. This set up shows promise on long par 3 holes and narrow fairway holes.

We had the same Crow issue at Heywood last week. Our group lost 2 balls on one hole.
Good result for an unknown course CB80. It would be pretty hard on the fairways by now, if you played the Attamura course.

I have not had the opportunity to play golf for the last few days. There has been a 4 day carnival on at Portland and we had visitors. My brother-in-law and I did manage a ” try croquette” session while the ladies were looking at the wonderful dahlia display adjacent.

Today I go out prior to the 11 a.m. competition start and did 18 holes by myself. I have been struggling keeping my tee shots in play lately. To get a centred strike on the Driver I had added a 1 inch width of blue painting tape to the end of the handle. This stuff feels slippery and you can feel if you creep back up to the end of the grip after a few practice swings. (i.e. my bad habit= heel strikes) . I also worked out that if I set up so that the centre of the Driver was level with the ball at address with outstretched arms, I got a reliable centre strike. I was watching a Mike Melaska video where he suggested doing several swings above the ball to get the feel of the shot you want to do. Then the idea was to do one down at ball level and then execute the shot with commitment. I tried this method today and it worked very well. I hit some of the best tee shots I have done for ages.

Putting; I have improved. My side saddle stance with a arm lock method, using the unusual looking Arc Master putter, has been cause for a few comments. Now that I am draining the occasional long putt and not missing others by much, a few players have asked to use my putter. It is totally useless for a conventional putter though.

Chipping; I had some success leaving the ball closer to the hole. What I had been doing previously was to concentrate on hitting my landing spot on the green and not much else. Often the ball would either be short or be misdirected. Today I was identifying the landing spot, how high it had to fly and where it was to finish. Visualization! The human brain is a powerful tool it seems.

Iron shot approaches; I tend to pull these by swinging around my body too much. So I used the swing above the ball thing and tried to finish with high hands and it was better.

4 Wood over drawing issue; I used the blue tape to make the shaft 43 inches and swung out to the right side of the target less, using a intermediate point. Better.!

I am on Pa duty this week, so no comps to try out these things to see if I can score better.

Have you seen any koalas at Heywood? That’s all I remember from the round I had there…

Koalas are plentiful around our district. Years ago I was part of a Land Care group that duplicated farm fence lines and planted habitat trees. We connected the Cobboboonee forest to the town. Now the Koalas live in Portland city in fairly high numbers, sometimes even walking into the shopping area. we have one male that likes to use our tree outside the bedroom for his personal bordello in mating season.

With the Blue gum plantations and plentiful water we have seen a migration south of the wallaby from central Victoria and an explosion in the numbers of roos. The panel beaters are happy, but the roos have cleaned up about 8 cyclists and motorcyclists in the past years (me included)

So, yes there are Koalas at the Heywood golf course. Every ball that I hit into the trees that rebound back onto the fairway I attribute to friendly Koalas throwing it back.

    Stats from Arccos.
According to the App I played like a 14 handicapper ( well I am at the moment) due to my driving and long approach shots ( yes/ agreed).
My approach shots from 45-150 m let me down, with 10 shots/ 56% short of the green).
    Driving I hit 56% of the fairways / misses L & R 21% ( sprayed it about) .
Up and down ratios were better than an 8 handicapper..
    Putting inside 15 m was good ( 6 one putts, 9 two putts and 3 three putts)= 33 total.

    Close, but no cigar!

Nope! Another poor start in the first 4 holes ( scored 6,6,6,6) 3 doubles and one bogey. Oh dear!
I regrouped in the latter part of the game, scoring 4 pars and the rest bogeys. Scored 89 OTS (46/43) / 33 points.
My mental state was not great today and it reflected in making a few poor decisions on shots/ club choice.

    What went wrong?
Poor position from tee shot causing extra shots =7
    Poor shots inside 100 m = 5
    Poor shots outside 100 m =4
    Putts / hole >2 = 3

9 holes this morning. I struck the Driver better. Maybe I can carry this form over to tomorrow’s comp.

The Vets game didn’t start off too well. My tee shot over faded and hit a tree on the right side of the fairway, but at least I got back into play this time, only to 3 putt for a triple bogey ( wipe) . Back on track the rest of the front nine, I hit 3 pars and 4 bogeys for a 44 OTS. I started the back nine well enough with a couple of bogeys, then a 3 putt on a par three for a double bogey. It was one of those convex greens that we all struggled to find the hole. Then on hole #15 I tried a 4W shot form the fairway hoping to hit the green 170 m away. I mishit it and the ball ran into the bush. I bashed it out into t he open and then tried a 50 % 6 Hybrid shot that almost made it up the steep green verge , but then rolled back down. I chipped it up and one putted= double bogey. All risk and no reward. Next hole ( par 5) I played conservatively and hit a birdie. There is a lesson there! Next hole I tried a 7 W approach intot eh green and left it out right too much ad hit a tree. The ball landed in the one section of the fairway with no grass. I was playing off dirt, and it took me 3 shots to go 70 m. Triple bogey again. I would have been better off using a partial hybrid shot and rolled the ball up to the green!! Instead I tried the ” perfect ” wedge shot. Dumb! The last hole I mishit a 7W approach shot, then took two shots to get onto the green . Another double bogey! 47 OTS , making for a 91 total.

I hit 10/14 fairways, but many of them I hit heel side of the Driver face. I hit 4/18 GIR and up and down 2/12. One birdie, 4 pars, 8 bogeys, 5 doubles >.

    I hit 4 dud shots outside 100 m ( two 4 W , two 7 W) from less than ideal lies/ should have used the hybrids.
Poor placement with Driver = 3 , costing extra shots
3 putting twice ( one was a stupid short putt that I jabbed at and it ran sideways)
Shots inside 100m that didn’t work= 6, mainly short of the green.

I think I will have to start warming up in the nets at courses that do not offer practice areas. I muck up the first tee shot too often.
