xrmanParticipantI played in the local Stableford comp today; Weather wet, cold, windy ( normal) soggy under foot. score 92/33 points
Two steps forward
1) I hit a few good draw shape tee shots with my 3 wood ( 14.5 draw setting) . I felt confident that I could do it.
2) I used my LW, PW, GW to pitch onto the greens rather than relying on the bump and run shots I have been using during summer. New 56 & 60 Cleveland CBX2 wedges arrive soon. I sold my 54,56 ,58 Cobra wedgesOne step back.
1) less than ideal tee shots on 4 holes. I pull, 2 mishits, one wrong club selection. Needs work!
xrmanParticipant9 holes match play in poor weather. I am not sure if that qualifies for the step back section!
Two steps forward
1) I only had a 60/04 lob wedge in my bag today. I hit it well.
2) I only lost by one hole. Score 46.One step back
1) pulled shots on hole 1 and 2 cost me 2 extra shots, then I pushed a tee shot on hole 4.did you get much of a warm up before teeing off? Ie pulled shots
No I didn’t. It is a bit difficult to warm up prior to the game when the club asks you to arrive 10 minutes prior to tee off time and there is a limit of 2 on the practice area.
I think the pull shot is me trying to hit the ball too hard. It is getting less frequent. I just need to spend some time on tempo for my tee shots. Tee shots are not a great part f my game at present.

xrmanParticipantI did 9 holes this morning; cold, dew on the ground, 25 kph winds from the North.
Two steps forward.
1) Score 42 ( 1 birdie, 1 par , 7 bogeys)
2) 9/9 fairways hit
3) chipping was accurateOne step back
1) Approach shots still not reaching GIR, but very close. Need to club up more .
2) 3 first putts rolled up to the hole , but failed to fall. Too much finesse?1 user liked this post.
xrmanParticipantlaunch monitor
Its changed so you must have figured out?
Magic?
The Backyard Golfer ( Erich from Italy) compared this Launch monitor ( or an earlier version of it called Atlas) to the Mevo.
Except for the wedges, they both gave similar readings ( distance, ball speed, carry), smash factor. I have found that also. High flying shots are not recorded. The Mevo gave more data like spin etc. but cost 5 times the price ( in Europe)1 user liked this post.
xrmanParticipantWe have faith in you, because you are “Special.”
Think of golf like playing dot to dot. Get it on the fairway, get it down the fairway, get it near the green, get it on the green, get it near the flag, get it down the hole. Work out which dot points are hurting your score and work on improving that aspect of your game.
Work out which clubs you hit well and use them as much as you can. Leave the others in the bag or at home.1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantI played the local club competition today. Score 90 ( 1 birdie, 2 pars, 12 bogeys, 3 doubles) 36 points
Two steps forward
1) I hit 10/14 fairways. Mostly with a fade shape, cause it works for me. The draws 50% success, but only one push into the trees.
2) Good fairway shots with 7 Wood and 3 hybrid ( both Cobras with baffler rails)
3) my approach shots with irons improved ( I play 6-GW) in accuracy. The misses were small ones. One step back
1) Bump and run shots were a strong point of my approach game during summer. Now they are ineffective in the soggy conditions.
2) My pitching / wedge shots today landed short or I just dug a trench in the soft fairways. There was not much run even when I used a 7 iron.
3) The stronger grip I tried today de-lofted the 4W ( no baffler rails) and I took deep-ish divots until I realized what I was doing and corrected for it.
4) I missed two putts from close in again. One I didn’t take enough time to get aligned. I was worried about standing on another player’s line. The other I hit just a tad too firmly and it did a loop around the hole and escaped.I am thinking of trying some Cleveland CBX2 wedges for the wetter months ( about 9/12 here) . They have more bounce and a wider sole. One of our playing group gave us a demonstration of how to hit low, spinny wedge shots into the green today. Very impressive performance!

2 steps forward was 3. 1 step back was 4. You are now officially worse off than when you started.
Darn! You are right. I am going backwards ( slowly)

xrmanParticipantRecently there has been little difference in my 4W and Driver distance ( both around 180m carry). I would like to get the Driver back out to 190-200 m. I got one out to 191 m today with a power fade shape. If I could get that consistently at this time of year I would be happy ( dense air , soggy ground). That distance puts me into range of the green with two shots on the shorter par 4’s. Other wise I calculate risk/ reward of dividing the remaining distance into two, or one long shot and one wedge shot.
Today my wedges were showing the need for more bounce. Shots I was hitting with confidence with my SW and LW a month ago just dug a big divot and went nowhere today. So dividing the distance in two made more sense.

Have you learnt to hit your potato wedge yet.?
Potato wedge? Like it digs like an excavator?
xrmanParticipantFair comment Commish, however the difference with the Melaska video is that he explains why a stronger grip helps as well as he shows how to test whether your grip is actually doing what you think it is. I have been told to use a strong grip by my coach and i thought I was doing it as per instruction. No-one had shown me how to check whether it was working in squaring the club face at full arm extension. I am sure Special can choose whether or not he wants to use Melaska’s advice/ teaching pearls of wisdom, as a well as continuing with his personal coach.
Are you using your left or right hand to get a strong grip?
Left hand to control the face and right hand to supply the power, or lack thereof into the back of the ball.
Previously I was using both hands rotated around the shaft possibly by equal amount and it didn’t work that well for me. As you mentioned previously , ” for me” doesn’t mean it is a universal fix. Having said that my golfing buddy in Texas and I were both having a case of the persistent pushes and this changed helped us both. It is so frustrating when you are trying all the theory ( from You Tube granted) and yet it doesn’t work reliably. No amount of video swing analysis would indicate a grip fault to a layman , but an experienced coach should be able to pick it, maybe. A one on one lesson situation should be a quicker way to identify and correct a grip fault, in that you change the grip and see the ball flight changes within a few swings.
For a lot of people getting a one on one lesson is difficult. Other than expense, finding a compatible coach, accessibility can be an issue. For me I can’t visit my coach until the S.A. border opens fully. It is a 220 km round trip and a whole day allocated to the exercise. It costs even more when my wife tags along and goes shopping!
xrmanParticipantTwo steps forward;
Today in a 9 hole social “comp” I scored a 41.
Driver shots showed improvement.
Short game was good-ish
Fade shots had longer distance and less side spinOne step back:
Tee shots hit the fairway most times but still lacking distance
Chips were not close to the pin ( >3 m) , on the green, but not near the pin.1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantHit the range today after my lesson Monday. Lesson Monday was working on swing path hitting in to out. Was using obstacles to ensure i don’t cut across it.
Today at the range had a bucket next to the ball that if i was even just a fraction out to in would hit it. Didn’t hit it once and when I got the swing right was hitting draws which I’ve never seen before in my life. Was plenty of miss hits but working on things that are very new to me so am expecting that until it feels more natural.
Good progress!
It is a great feeling when you can draw a shot on command after all that effort. Congratulations!
Have a look at Mike Melaska’s You Tube video on grip. it can make closing the club face to square at impact a lot easier if you know how to measure if your grip is strong enough. Even though I was getting draw shape with irons, hybrids and fairway woods, it was eluding me with the Driver. Mike’s advice on grip was the missing link for me. -
