xrmanParticipantHow did I go you ask? It was cold and wet and windy. I was playing with the secretary and she was keeping the sore. Just for fun we both hit off the forward tees. I managed a few good approach shots to the scrapes. I chipped on mainly using the PW. My putting on the scrapes was OK , but some were much softer than others. I finally worked out the de-lofting the putter made the ball roll on the soft scrapes. We got lost on the course playing a few holes out of order. We also witnessed a car roll over adjacent to the golf course. Ambos and Police cars everywhere. It was 3 degrees on the way home and It almost looked like snow hitting my windshield

xrmanParticipantTime for some cross training. I am going to Hamilton tomorrow (do I need my thermals?) for a game at the Parklands course, with sand scrapes. We have a Vets Association executive meeting at 2 p.m. and being treasurer I thought it best to get the books in order. It has been such an erratic season; on again, off again. I must be a good at the job because I have $130 in credit that I cannot account for. It happened while I was away for 2 months, so I can’t take the credit for it!

xrmanParticipantHigh Wind warning. If you have not had the gales yet, they are coming east.
xrmanParticipantThe weather is turning to SHit again. The wind has turned from strong Northerly to blustery West winds.
Tony cancelled the measuring session for obvious reasons. So it was either stay at home and feel sad ( our dog was euthanized yesterday) or wack some balls. I chose the latter.
I had been watching a Swedish golfer ( Marcus Egblad ex long drive champ) on YT and thought I would give his ideas a go. His idea for speed is a slow lead hand and a fast trail hand, giving that towel whip feeling I guess. I think it worked, but with the wind effect it was hard to judge. The first few holes were erratic, as is usual when trying a new feeling, but I think it has merit. Time will tell, no doubt.
Arccos judged my tee shots at 16 handicap, approach at 3 handicap, short game at 23 and putting 28. I did miss a few today. I 3 putted three times. On hole 4 ( my nemesis) I three putted from 2 m! I was trying the lag putt method of looking at the hole today. It doesn’t seem to work for me. I got some decent shots with the approach fairway woods and hybrids. I chunked one iron shot while trying to take divots. I am a sweeper, possibly due to my initial golfing when I was recovering from a fracture clavicle. It hurts when you hit the ground.
10 holes /score 49/ one birdie, 2 pars, 5 bogeys , 2 doubles.

xrmanParticipantShort game +++++ . Very impressive OB!
xrmanParticipantAfter my continuing battle with the weed SP trees this morning, I was suppose to help Tony with some measurements of his carry distances with his new irons and work on his Driver selection. He is in his mid 70’s with a slower swing speed and still using the same drive from 10 + years ago. From observation he hits his 5W further than his Driver.
Anyway he had to cancel, so I went out for a quick 18 holes while the sun was still shining.
I hit three balls off the tee to compare them. I was using an Inesis 900 Tour ans ball one ( the one I score with) then a Srixon Soft Feel and TM RBZ soft ( less spinny). Hole one reinforced the need to warm up before playing. I crept up on the hole and sunk the putt for a bogey. I think the front 9 showed that it only takes one good shot to salvage the hole. I was doing pretty well until the par 3 8th got me. My LW shot over the bunker left me with a long uphill putt that I wimped out on and scored a 5 ( 3 putts).
The back 9 is drying up now and I got a few 196 m Driver shots. My approach shots were close to the greens , if not on. This is where I found the difference with the high spin Inesis ball and the others. I had to chip the ball closer to the hole and rely on the spin to stop it rolling through the hole. It is definitely something I will do in summer. While the greens are still soft, the cheaper Surlyn covered balls worked OK.Trying different shape tee shots on various holes helped me decide what shot to play and where to aim for some holes. For example, I ended up behind that darned Cypress tree again on the 16th. A fade shape/ straight tee shot to end up right side of fairway makes more sense.

xrmanParticipantLock down light carries on. Boring!
Function after function is being cancelled because of the overly restrictive measures the government has applied.
I cut down about 20 Sweet Pittosporum trees this morning. Who needs a gymnasium?
Ballarat is locked down again. No-one is surprised!
xrmanParticipantMaybe you need to play AFL golf. You get points for a near miss!!!

xrmanParticipantRing on Friday? What’s that?
xrmanParticipantOK those definitions helps me. What I was dooing was thinking on the holes I didn’t par, which shot/s lead to the poor performance
In that case the 7W fade off the tee isn’t counted. The other fairway shots were just ugly strikes that didn’t leave me in a great spot for the next shot.
The iron approach shot misses were all just left of the green, leaving an easy chip onto the green. I need to aim a tad more right.
The tee shots that went way too far left, all resulted in me having to use my short hybrid to punch out with to get it back on the fairway. I am getting pretty good at doing that with a lot of practice lately.I spent an hour or so cutting out an area of Sweet Pittosporum at the golf club this morning. I found a few lost balls in there, mainly crappy one. Obviously golfer who slice don’t buy good balls. Anyway on the way back to the cart shed , I stopped off and banged those balls around on 16,17,18 th holes. I aimed up the right of centre of the fairway and swung at it. I found that if I choked down about 1/2 inch I felt more in balance and could swing a bit faster. I think my problem is that I don’t trust my draw shape will come back 100%. I found that if I aimed where a push shot would be fine ( right semi rough) then it didn’t matter if they didn’t draw back to centre.

xrmanParticipantUsing Weetbix’s analysis of the holes where I didn’t par , I found the following.
Tee shots : 6 mainly going too far left ( Is is the start line or do I have too much weight on the heel side of the Driver ( 20 gm)
Fairway shots: 4 mishits . ( one was a 7W tee shot that over faded/ not really a mishit)
Iron approach shots: 3 pulled left
Putting: 1 ( hole 4/ hate that green)
xrmanParticipantI played 18 holes with Adriano this morning. The weather was overcast at first and half way through the game the rain came. It was heavy rain. My 4W and 7W worked well and I even hit a couple of full LW shots onto the green. It was fun! 86 OTS ( 4 pars, 13 bogeys, 2 doubles). I tried a few 8i chip shots, but length control was an issue. I think I am better using the PW for that shot. Hole #4 got me again/ 3 putts. and hole 7 I hit the tee shot into the trees right side.
My Driver shot starting line needs to be more right of centre. Hopefully we stay out of lock down long enough to work on it.

xrmanParticipantGood to hear that you are on the course OB.
29 points= almost a reasonable performance in my book ( C grade game) or like my school report used to say, ” could do better, if he applied himself”
The non- competition handicap games ??? Really, what is the difference in risk of virus transmission? Bugger all! But what would I know, I spent 40+ years in applied infection control, I am not a Public Health expert.
Reading between the lines, we will be back under house arrest very soon. The doubling of cases every two weeks will leak out to the Regional areas . Maybe Dan will do a double vaxxed concession, but I doubt it. He is a one trick pony.
If you want a preview of the weather send me an e-mail and I will predict what you will get in 6 hours time by looking out my west side window. It is raining hard now and the wind has dropped a bit.
xrmanParticipantI had a dental visit this afternoon. Adriano asked me to have a hit after work. It would have been rude to refuse.
I hit a 42 for 9 holes. I used my Cleveland HB Turbo 12 degree driver and hit some good tee shots with it. The longer shaft in the 4 Wood is giving me much needed distance for the 170 m approach shots. I have confidence that I can hit a good draw for maximum distance and a fade when I wan to to stop. Same with the 7W . I am getting 160 m with a draw and some good stopping shots with a fade. The TS2 hybrid is giving me reliable shot shape and distances in the 125-135 m range. My lag putting was a bit sketchy this afternoon, but the second putts wee dropping.
It was great to be outside and having fun again.

xrmanParticipantIt felt a bit strange getting my golf cart out of the storage shed at the course. I headed over to the first tee and warmed up for 2 minutes with my non- orange whip. Arccos switched on and I was ready to rock.
Today I was testing a 10 .5 Driver (Nike 45 inch shaft) and the Inesis 900 Tour Ball. I hit a fade off the tee to get to the corner ( it worked) then a 7 W to get down to the green ( missed right) , chipped on and 2 putted for a Bogey. I am happy with bogey on the first hole.
Hole 2 I hit a 184 m draw ( aimed right and brought it back= Yes!) The lie wasn’t great so I hit my SL hybrid and missed slightly left of the green. I aimed my chip shot with PW at the flag and darn near hit it. Par.
Hole 3 another 188m draw that worked, mid fairway ( maybe I should have long breaks from golf more often). 4W down the hill and it drew left a tad far. That left me a around the tree draw shot 130 m distance. I tried a choked down 6 hybrid shot ( the new TS2) and the ball spun enough to stop on the top right green area. That left me a long downhill right to left breaking putt. I left the first one 3 m short, missed the second just and had a tap in uphill for 3 putts. Bogey.
Hole 4 Crap tee shot with the 10.5 driver mishit. Very good 6H 145m full swing for GIR. That TS2 feels hot off the face. Disappointing putting on this slopey green. 3 putts.
Hole 5 GIR wiht the Driver with a nice fade off the tee. 2 putts for a par. Happy man.
Hole 6 186m draw to the outside corner of the dogleg right, then a 8 iron to the centre of the green for GIR, & Par.
Hole 7 Another good draw 186m off the tee , then a good 7W to get about 90 m from the green. I added a club extra to get up the hill and over did it a bit, so I had to use the 3H to bump it onto the green . Bogey.
Hole 8 : I pulled my 7 i shot and ended in the bunker. I chipped it out of the firm sand with a LW and two putted for Bogey.
Hole 9 I tried another Draw off the tee and it worked, then a PW for a GIR , but three putted. The first one was long and I rushed the second. Bogey.Half way 3 pars, 6 bogeys. I was happy with that.
The back nine is still wet and soft. Hole 10 is particularly soft and I had 173 m carry off the tee with a fade shot. It pugged in the mud ! My approach shot with 7W 144m was on line until it faded at the end of the ball flight. I chipped on with my PW, but it went too far. Bogey.
Hole 11 I hit the 7W off the tee with a fade and it needed a bit more distance. I bumped it on with the 3H and 2 putted. Bogey.
Hole 12: A solid 206m draw ( got some run maybe) , then a &w faded to the green and 2 putts. Par
Hole 13. the tee shot launch angle was too low ( 172 m) and I got onto the 4W shot to the corner ( 164m ) I hit a 7i at the green with a fade ( it didn’t) so I bumped on with the 3H again and 2 putted . Bogey.
Hole 14 I teed up and hit the draw shape 186m ( looke low) then a choked down 6H for a GIR. ( 127M) . Par.
Hole 15 A bit wet still. 12 degree driver 189m, then a 7W GIR fade. Par. I hit two shots off the tee on this hole testing the Inesis 900 Tour Vs A Bridgestone Super Soft ( equal distance and about 2 metres part)
Hole 16 Nike Driver was too low again . I had to hook the ball around the Cypress pine on the corner with a choked down 6H ( 134m). I tired a 4W shot out of a questionable lie ( just to see if I could) with the Inesis ball and yep that ball spins well. I was disappointed with the 20 m Bump shot shot that only just reached the green. I tried it three times and only got a bit closer. I tried with the PW and the ball rolled up to the hole. Lessons learned! It was a bit rough and wet to try a bump and run shot. Anyway I went back to the first ball to putt and sunk a long one. Why can’t I do that all the time?
Hole 17 I faded a shot to the corner and in play, then a 4W approach shot ( short), then a 10 m SW chip ( too soft / no run) . Bogey
Hole 18. I faded a Nike driver onto the green, then 2 putted for par.Despite the wet conditions I played better on the back nine with 5 pars.
What I learned today
1) I need more than 10.5 loft on a Driver for my modest swing speed.
2) The Inesis 900 Tour has a nice feel and at my swing speed seems as long as other balls. $39 dozen in yellow.
3) I like the TS2 29 hybrid ( set flat) I can get 127m ( choked down 2 inches; 134 m choked down 1 inch, and near 140m at full length)
4) I hit more greens using the fade shape with 7W and 6H
5) I play much better when I don’t have a score card in my pocket.
6) I can putt OK Inside 10 feet, but three putts are related more to inaccurate chips/ pitch shots leaving a long distance for the first putt.Sorry about the detail: it is intended mainly for CB80 as he knows my course.
