A virtual golf tournament… Great idea. I’ll have to dust off my WGT golf clubs.

If the L4G marketing department got onto this, it could become a mainstream news story and L4G forum would be flooded with new users.

I mean, how many times does the mainstream media have to run stories about virtual drinks, virtual office morning tea and even bloody virtual parties.

I think one of the symptoms of covid-19 has been overlooked; News production creativity impairment.

    No.

    Wait.

That symptom was prevalent pre covid-19.

I 100% agree that exercise and some form of escape will be key for everyone as this period of self isolation deepens. Whether that is a game if golf, going for a surf, fishing (shore or boat) etc is what is best, needed, by / for each person. Everyone is different. Responsible self distancing and limited interaction with others is key. Travel distance within reason is not the issue IMO.

Bigger risks and issues in the local supermarket or Bunnings. FFS, some people just don’t get the distancing idea. I’d rather police issue fines in the supermarket or shopping centre than have them worry about a few people walking on the beach. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying congregation at beach is ok, but FFS, if you’re in the surf and someone is within 1.5m of you they feel like they are in your wetsuit with you. Surfers are easily more than 1.5m apart nearly all the time, even in crowded lineups. Every crowded surf lineup picture needs to be run parallel with a picture of the local Coles or Woolies.

    @Commish
hope all is going as well as can be expected for your Mrs. Been there done that and would hate to be going through any of it with this bug in the community.

@weetbix has identified the core issue. i.e. the “robustness” of the ratings of tees on the same course.

I feel that both slope and scratch rating need to be checked for all tees her in Australia before competition rounds are played from different tees in the same comp.

I also like the idea from @deege of medal rounds or club champs being played across all tees on the course. That would mix up the rounds, make players think a bit more and add another element to the outcome. All players play off back markers, then say forward tees, then say usual comp tees etc. With mixed pin positions, the player ability to adjust best to course conditions would be a good element for the outcome.

A forward tee on a par 3 with a pin tucked up behind a front bunker vs it playing as a long par 3 with pin back centre of green? Same course, very different shot and mindset needed.

I’d still probably hit it fat and have to chip on regardless.

Hey crew. View from my sick bed is a bit different. I’ve had a lot of time to dig deep into information and assess impacts.

For those of you that don’t know, my “job” is business and financial strategy. An analytical mind by nature, I look at all angles.

    In no.particular order:

    – this thing is serious shit. We are in for a health system in crisis. Lots of health workers not going to work for fear of impact in them and their family. We may well see military medical personnel deployed into the public health care system.

    – the health issue will not peak until July / August. ATM, it’s the calm before the storm. Get ready to know of people who get very sick.

    – the economic impact will see countries and corporations collapse. Think Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae on steroids. The GFC will pale into insignificance.

    – best you can do, we all can do, is be prepared. Think water, food, power, safety, cooking and communication. How can you prepare now. Government will try to keep food supply, fuel, etc going but it will be constricted as more and more people sucumb to the virus. Any power / water / telecommunications infrastructure faults will take a lot longer to repair. Prepare to be without.

    – resilience is key. Alert but not alarmed. Focus on what you can control, do what you can and get prepared now.

Best analogy I’ve heard. We have a cat 5 cyclone bearing down on us, the sun is shining and sky is blue. It’s the calm before the storm.

I hope we all make it out alive. Take care. Be safe. Look after your loved ones.

Life as we knew it is no more.

Ok…we’ve decided that in the current climate, it is better to cancel the game in April, and try to reschedule if possible later in the year.

Our games are less about the golf, than the social aspect post-game. This is the most challenging part given the advice from all authorities to avoid the close group contact. And for those attending, this, we feel, is the most important part. Also, we don’t want to put people in the position of having to choose to play or not in the current environment. So as the most responsible position to take, we have taken the decision to cancel.

Apologies to all who have committed and paid – money is in the bank for next time, and we will keep everyone updated as we get through this time of madness, and hopefully come out of it sooner rather than later and get back together as a group, without the spectre of disease hanging over our heads.

    Cheers

    Good call.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Played Caboolture today. Turfers has done a great job maintaining the course through rain and drought. The greens are excellent.

They have preferred lie in place but it’s not really necessary.

    I had 41 for 18 and 42 for 17 for 35 all up – took my handicap down 0.3 to 11.1

Played with Weeti today at Caboolture. 25 points off 14.

9 points on the front but only 2 wipes. Just always seemed to have 1 shot too many. Tidied it up on the back with 44/16.

So, are these from Brisbane Fairways comp?

PS I used to have a clause in the T/C’s on the former site that anyone that is not registered to play in this event cant comment about the event. I may need to reimpose that!;)

So, I can put my name down, comment away and then pull out (blaming the corona-virus recession)?

Rumor confirmed. Covid-19 impact at the caddies school … mother of a yr12 student got it from a confirmed case. I understand there is a few days between, when mother and case had contact and when case got the news, so mother has been infecting her kids, house, friends, etc. and kids have taken it to to school.

We’re still ok, mild symptoms. Caddie is no just fatigue and headache. Mine is still mild sore throat, headache and fatigue however my glands in neck, and neck, very tight and sore today.

    Yeah take care mate

    Cheers weeti.

Still alive. I just have mild symptoms.

The caddie just has a really bad headache and obviously flat.

Unconfirmed (as yet) rumour a covid-19 case had been traced to the caddies school. Hoping to learn more today.

Good thing is that I can cancel at any time if great bargains pop up

It’s also possible that if the shackles come off in Oz but international travel remains risky that people will flood out for holidays locally and prices will head up so we will see

Easy to cancel if I need to

I think we are still adjusting to the new “norm” and live will continue on. Air travel is still relatively safe, though depends on who you sit next too. Take a window seat is the safest sport but dont lick the glass!

People will want to get out as safe as possible and will travel locally.

There’s a lot of economic and financial disruption spreading … I doubt the majority of people will have $$$ to afford to travel.

SO many businesses telling staff they’ll be off on unpaid leave once any annual leave us used up. I’ve know of:

    – mid size Accounting firm in Brisbane closing at end of this week until 30 June.

    – private school told teachers yesterday they only have money for two more pay periods because people have stopped paying school fees.

    – several large construction companies looking at appointment of administrator, not paying sunnies because developer has not paid them.

    – retail businesses looking to close up. Trading was already tough and they are behind on rent. Landlords sending default notices, so shops looking to close up and walk away.

    – cafe’s, restaurants and clubs with big drops in customers even before the new 100 person limits. Staff hours being slashed and or people just not getting shifts.

    – couple of events hire businesses and catering businesses in big trouble after events cancelled. Being sued by suppliers but event not paying them because it was cancelled.

If you saw the health management charts to flatten the curve, you’ll see they have peak in August. We got a long way to go and a lot of people, businesses, just don’t have the cash to trade through.

Don’t mean to be doom and gloom, but, reality is hitting bloody hard out there. That’s before the impact of the health crisis even hits us.

Due to current State of Emergency re CoVID 19 will this event be postponed?

Just because I am doing a lot of work on this at the moment in a work context, here are my thoughts.

We will be asking that anyone who is showing any respiratory symptoms or fever elect not to participate. We have a healthy emergency list so even if you make this call very late you will likely not lose your dough. If you are subject to an authority imposed self isolation order (ie international travel within 14 days or exposure to confirmed case), then we may be able to cover your fees from our reserves even if we can’t get someone to replace you .

We recommend that players avoid shaking hands or engaging in other physical contact during the round and maintain sensible distances (1.5M plus) while on the course. If you are in a risk category, you might not wish to hang around for a meal afterwards, but that is your call.

    Updates as developments require.

That’s all incredibly sound based upon current status of the spread of this COVID-19 thing.

Having been laid up at home for a few days, I’ve been doing a but of reading. WHO info and other credible sources.

I’ll be surprised if the golf club is open for you to play.

This thing has our government on the back foot. Look at the US and Europe announcements. We’re likely a week away from similar shut downs.

I booked accom at Chateau Elan at the Vintage – was cheaper but also allowed for cancellation up to a few days before if I need it

Only 5 minutes from the dinner venue

Tossing up whether to drive down – will save a tonne

I’d be holding off booking anything. Going to be some serious bargains around. This COVID-19 thing has some serious financial impacts yet to unfold.

As alluded to in the GC Friday social round thread, my caddie and I both have some sort of illness.

Mate stayed with us on Thursday night, he’d flown over from Perth on Friday.

Daughter called me from school about lunchtime, feeling unwell. She had bit of a temp, slight sore throat, headache and just felt flat.

Over the weekend I started to feel the same. Mild sore throat, mild temp, headache and just flat, meh, feeling.

We’ve been resting. Staying hydrated. Etc.

This ‘bug’ feels weird. Whatever it is, it’s not like a cold. No runny nose, no sneezing. Odd dry cough.

I contacted covid-19 health line. Basically got told ‘suck it up”, we only test known contacts. Interesting to see WHO came out overnight and told authorities they need to do more testing. I suspect what we’ve got is it, but we’re mild symptoms. But, my wife doesn’t, so she is off to work. So, without proof, how do you convince people?

Look, we’re ok. Mild symptoms of whatever we’ve got. But, if the throat gets worse or breathing gets impacted, I’ll be getting to hospital ASAP.

    Stay safe everyone.

In other words, most needed more than 5 hours notice of a game..:)

Actually, I had to get my daughter from school because she was showing flu like symptoms!

    she ok?

    Temp.

    Sore throat.

    Cough.

    Hmmm.

And, FWIW I have sore throat too, bit of temp, no cough.

We had mate stay with us last night. He flew over from Perth on Thursday. Straight from airport to us.

    Hmm.

Do you have enough toilet paper???

    he will use lasagna sheets!

    Ouch!!

Hope they are both virus free though..

    Can not confirm or deny.

I’ll post update details in my journey thread.
