Played the frog yesterday…yering shut on Friday. Frog again today, but no comp available, and they were shutting down tonight.
Let’s hope this is over sooner rather than later. But I suspect that’s unlikely.

Smoldy....when only the best will doFor me…black tees at Yering means at least 2 clubs difference in either the 2nd shot, or the approach shot – which could be the 4th shot – on every hole. To me, that means about 6 holes that I can potentially reach in reg become unreachable without an extra shot.

We played Gailes yesterday and a member at Jindalee had a lower cap there than at his home course – but those who have played both tell me that Jindalee is an easier not harder course
So I remain doubtful about the quality of the ratings
I’m inclined to agree re the robust-ness of ratings. I use my current versus previous course as a good example.
Frog – Slope 136, ACR 73, Par 72. YM…the minimum is the Valley layout, holes 10-27, Slope 134, ACR 72, Par 72.
Not only are all of the layouts at Yering more difficult (in my opinion) than the Frog (Nursery 136, 72, 72, Homestead 139, 72, 72), mainly due to the amount of water on probably all bar half a dozen of the 27 holes, but the course rating of 73 at the Frog is a bonus compared to the ridiculously low (by comparison) 72 at YM.
My handicap at YM is the same as when I left the Frog. After jumping about 3 shots at one point. I can tell you right now – I have to play a hell of a lot better to shoot 36 at YM than I do to do the same at the Frog.

I agree with Schmuck. Distance off the tee does not necessarily relate to handicap. Christ knows, the number of blokes on our forums who I’ve played with who belt it 50m past me and are off higher handicaps (hello Ink, et al) you need more than both hands to count. Benny is another good example…hits it no more than 190-200 off the tee…and has a handicap around 12.
Short game, an element of bunker skills and decent putting can make up a lot for those that don’t get it out there.

Smoldy....when only the best will do34 points playing off 18 at the Frog today…a game of 2 halves…which, by definition, they all are….anyway…21 on the front, 6 over, including doubles on 1,2 and 6. Pars on 3,4,5,8, birdie on 9. Played to my handicap (a 2 pointer) on only one hole on the 9 – the 7th – where my par putt lipped out.
Nothing exciting on the back…clearly…2 wipes, 10 (greenside bunker for 2…didn’t get out, then plugged, then at the bottom of the bunker again, finally out…of the bunker, and shots) and 14 (basically just played it like shit). 6 x 2 pointers on this 9. One 1 pointer (on my favourite hole, the 15th).
Should get me back to around 15.2-15.3ish, which would put me off 17 on all the layouts at Yering. My aim when joining there was to be off 18 on all of them…so this is a good thing. Didn’t play there today, as for the second time in a month or so they decided to do a Black Tee Stroke day. Jam that where the sun don’t shine.
Back at YM tomorrow for Stableford. Off the Blues.
