Have been in Jewellery trade…and same company…for 43 years after leaving school at age 15.

Became Manager in 1988 and when the boss retired in 2000 myself and another tradesman took it over becoming partners. We split the partnership up in 2011 and he graciously allowed me to keep this business name going. In 2015 I had what I consider some sort of breakdown and decided that I needed to do something else to save my sanity and that of my family. With my love of golf and how golf works, I took on a role at Elanora Country Club as Course Marshal and I can honestly say that it was a decision that has changed my life, for the better.

Now I’m there 4 days, still a casual but doing around 28-30 hours a week..still running the Jewellery manufacturing business from home, 2 days a week, so in reality I’ve turned my job into a hobby and my hobby into a job…and I love it!

Did we ever confess the full story to the team about what was allegedly yours and my first ever meeting on the putting green at Palm Meadows of the very first Saturday of the very first Nationals?
Following a few weeks worth of sledging and offers of huge bets for a putt off?
and how the end bet was upwards of $200 after I kept on running my mouth off?
and how your first putt was the worst in the history of the world?
and how I had to try and make mine even worse without trying to make it look obvious?

    Good times….

You are one of the very good blokes JB and I am very thankful that you’re still hanging onto the skills of your new hobby

That was a classic…I couldn’t have had a worse putt if I tried!

Thanks Bumpa, some great friendships made through this great game.

Let me introduce myself first. Took up golf at 60, five years later I’m down to 17.4, slow learner.
Started work at 16 in an Abattoir, stayed 8 years and made some good money, all of which I wasted. Then drove a taxi for 6 years full time (then another 6 years part time), moved up to Buses where I continued for the next 36 years. Currently unemployed and not looking for work, will have to soon, money getting tight. The lack of a Job has helped my golf game a great deal.

My mum told me, “You should never talk with your mouth full.” Must admit, I do find it hard to talk and drink at the same time, so yeah, quiet most of the time. I can still type and drink though..

The winding path of work n life has lead my from cleaning toilets and mowing lawns to trainee bean counter, qualified bean counter, bean counter in business, partner in bean counter firm, bean counter in different businesses, management consultant, then business consultant for SME, and now my current gig as a business and financial strategist.

I’ve also gone from surfing ever morning, to twice a day or more, to mornings only before work, to once mid week and weekends, to hardly ever, to every day, to my current set up of daily if conditions and my lower back allows.

Golf has gone from NFI, to active improvement with lessons and practice, to barely any idea, to twice weekly competition rounds and still barely NFI, to basically nothing for years other than an odd social game, to new clubs, lessons, practice and fleeting hints of lossing the NFI tag.

By the time you realise this part of my signature doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

Success is the ability to go from one failure to the next without any loss of enthusiasm.

And a very warm welcome to the NFI club. It is in fact the biggest golfing fraternity world wide. Just enjoy it, the rest is just what happens on the day..

Wow, what a different topic. Not that I mind, I’m ‘working’ from home with this virus thing going mad.

15 started at the local shopping centre pushing trolleys.
Moved my way up through packing groceries, yes into paper bags. Onto the fruit & Veg section.
Finished Yr 12 to start an apprenticeship in Sheetmetal Engineering. Travelled for 18mths, came back worked a few random jobs in sheetmetal, then went back to buy into the business I did completed apprenticeship.
Working 10-12hr days, 6 days a week, for 12yrs, trying to study towards a WH&S Diploma, took a toll on marriage.
Sold up business, separated, took a step back.
Started a new job after a few mths as a Maintenance Supervisor with DEXUS in shopping centre.
WIth no opportunity to advance I moved to Mackay, 41/2hrs Sth of Townsville. Took up a role as an Operations Manager with Colonial First State. After 3yrs in Mackay, the business merged and I was made redundant.
The move to Brisbane over 4yrs ago had me start an Ops Mgr role with Shayher Group. Have since moved into a Snr role and hopefully this is where my journey will end…in a few more years yet I hope.

Winner 13th Beach (Beach) Nationals 2019
