Can break 80Participant“I have been trying to work on a consistent approach to playing hole one. I am trying to hit my 4W off the tee, leaving about 150 m approach to the green. If I use Driver I have been going through the fairway and having an uncertain lie for shot 2. I have used the 4Hybrid ( my 150 m) club, but the last two times I have run through and left myself short sided. At least I am getting better with LW shots onto downhill sloping greens.”
answer
As the hole rates 6, it is a reasonably difficult one to begin with, so just play for a bogey to start your round with to give you confidence.
hit 4w off tee, then according to web site hitting just short is better then going over, so if 150m to go, hit 125m or 130m, giving you a gentle chip on and 2 putt for an easy 5 for 2.
you dont want to start with a double.1 user liked this post.

you dont want to start with a double. You got it in one CB80. I usually try to land my approach short and left side of the green. The ball rolls downhill and funnels right towards the sea. What I should have used was my 5 Hybrid to stop the roll out amount. The other scenario is that the ball goes a little too far left and rolls into the shallow bunker. That is usually just a short chip out of the hard sand ( easy shot) .
I am playing for a bogey on holes one and two for building confidence reasons. I won’t say no to a par though, if and when it happens!

xrmanParticipantI visited friends in western Victoria during the week. I chose to ride my Triumph Tiger and stashed 6 clubs in one of those pencil case bags on the back of the bike. I played the Edenhope and Nhill courses.
The layouts I would describe as easier than my local courses, with wide fairways, fewer and shorter trees between fairways, flat sandy soil and traps with actual sand in them. I took a Driver, 22 hybrid, 7iron, PW, SW and putter.
Two steps forward
1) I hit a lot of fairways with my 44.5 ” Nike driver
2) I hit quite a few greens with the old Cobra F7 22 degree hybrid from 150-160 m out. I missed all the bunkers too.One step back
1) I kept reading too much slope on my putts and missed a lot. 37 putts for one round was my worst performance for a while. The Nhill greens were a bit slow and furry. I liked the Edenhope greens though. They were cut shorter and slicker.1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantTomorrow we have another Vets game in Portland. The weather will be the same as today ; crappy rain and windy 40 k.p.h.+
Adriano and I went out for a practice hit this morning. I had heard that the greens had been cored and sanded. The rumour was that they had trouble with the machine tearing the cores, then it rained during sanding and then when it dried out the sand blew a way. All in all the greens are not in great condition.
I hit an 86 round; 5 pars, 11 bogeys and two doubles. Once I worked out the greens ( slow speed / not much slope effect) I stopped 3 putting. I am still not happy with my tee shots. I pulled a couple into the left rough and pushed another right. My iron shots were going right at first , but that slowly corrected as the game progressed.
For the first time I can recall my GA handicap 14.7 and Arccos handicap rating are the same.
Two steps forward.
1) Short game worked pretty well
2) Approach shots were reasonable inside 150mOne step back
1) Control on fades off the tee is erratic. I was turning them over and they went too far left.1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantThe weather didn’t moderate much today for the Vets game.
I started poorly with two doubles on holes 1&2 ( both three putts) , but I recovered with two pars. I beat hole #4 today! I was doing really well on hole #7 , with a 237 m Drive and a long 4W to be pin high for two shot. I had to pitch over the bunker in longish grass and hit it a bit hard. I managed to clear the bunker and the green! Oops! Then I hit a delicate chip with the LW short of the green ( bugger) . That is frustrating to hit two shots for almost 500 m, then 3 to cover only 30M!!!
The rest of the game I was driving quite well, even the fades off the tee were working! I did pull two shots left rough on 12 and 14, but got back into play without having to chip out. I got a double on 12 when I three putted and a double on 14 when I under clubbed for my approach shot.
Two steps forward.
1) Drives went well today
2) I adapted to the crappy greens fairly well. One step back
1) I wasted several shots through poor strike ( fat), possibly trying to hit too hard with the wind, rather than clubbing up and swinging easy. SO maybe wrong club selection is the issue?1 user liked this post.

xrmanParticipantI have been travelling again. This time we went to Adelaide to visit friends and check out their new houses. Good fun was had by all, plus some very hot weather.
While I was away I played a couple of games and Marion golf park on the south coast of Adelaide and Flagstaff Hill course.
I have played the 9 hole Marion course before. Cheap and cheerful is how I would describe this hilly golf course. But what a view of the coast! My mate and I got a good deal at Flagstaff Hill course. It is a bit more up market, with fairly good greens, but the fairways are drying up fast. I was playing with my wife’s clubs ( minus 7 wood / 14 mini Driver), plus my summer SW/LW, 10.5 degree Nike Driver, Arc Master putter and a 22 hybrid. Two Steps forward
1) I was hitting the Driver well with a tight draw shape.
2) I was putting well despite the greens being much faster than at my home course. LW shots with the 60/04 wedge were working quite well from the bare tight lies. One Step back
1) I was having trouble getting my carry distances worked out with the HB Launcher irons. Eventually I worked out that they are stronger on loft than my irons. Problem solved. I still struggle getting them to fade reliably, possibly too much off- set? After a week we returned to the land of the long grey cloud ( SW Victoria) and the weather pattern returned to cold and wet and windy. Today I went over the border to get my ute serviced and played 18 holes at the Blue Lake course in Mt. Gambier while I was waiting. I had my wife’s full set ( none of my clubs) and played with them quite well.
Two Steps
1) Using the 14 degree mini Driver with the Eureka swing method. It suited the narrow fairways and I only missed the 18th . It was like playing in a Scottish mist all afternoon. The 7 wood was very effective on second shots. I was playing from the forward tees, so I managed to reach a few greens on par 4’s in two shots.
2) Lag putting went well. Scored 80.One Step back
1) It took 9 holes to work out carry distances with the irons. I still like them , but they are draw biased.1 user liked this post.

Thanks Can Break 80. I hope the same for you.
Not much golf has been played in the last week , with X-mas approaching and all.
I did manage to find a Ladies Flex 5 wood ( Adams brand) to complete my wife’s set. I know last of the big spenders!I am happy to report that during a brief break in the weather I took my wife to the course for a hit. After a warm up doing 1/4 and 1/2 swings off a tee, we did 3 holes. She teed off with her 5 iron/hybrid and hit the next shots with a a 9 iron. The look on her face when she got most of them airborne was priceless! Then she tried a 7 wood tee shot and sent it out about 80 m. She was hooked!
The weather turned to crap again so we cut it short.-

xrmanParticipantI was out of bed early and teed off at 7:30 It was mild a slightly sunny, with little if any wind at first.
I was trying to play stress fee golf, hitting shots I know I can hit in a effort to keep the ball in play. In essence, club up one club and swing a bit easier.
On hole #1 I aimed at the corner of the dogleg left and hit an easy Driver shot and popped the ball within an 8 i range. I had the distance right but the ball drifted out right, so I was short sided and had a rise to get over. I tried a bump and run with my 5 -Hybrid. I didn’t quite hit it hard enough, but got in the hole with 2 putts. This stress free golf might just work. A bogey on this hole isn’t a bad start.
For the rest of my round I managed to hit the fairway all but 4 times. two left and two right in the light rough, which resulted in one par and three bogeys. Arccos is telling me I need to work on my distance off the tee. I think I will need to get a bit fitter over the next months before I start any speed training though. The old body is groaning a bit of late.
Anyway I was much happier with my 6,7,8 iron approach shots @ 115 m-135 m ( 8 GIR today) and I managed two up and down pars. Approach shots 135-165 m were not so good today, where my SL hybrids were going left.
Chipping went well today, getting closer to the pin, hence the better putting numbers. I am getting confident with my 60 and 56 CBX2 wedges, rather than always coming in low with an 8 i, PW. I was running past the pin a lot when short sided.
The putter was on song for all but two holes. One of the three putt hole was a brain fart, tap in putt that turned more than a Shane Warne flipper. 33 putts ( 5 by one, 11 by two and two by 3)
2 birdies, 8 pars, 7 bogies, one double for 79. How I wish I could do this in a competition round!!

xrmanParticipantWell it didn’t last long. I began to cough yesterday afternoon and felt unwell. Having sick Grand kids last week , I guess it was inevitable that they would share their bugs. I dosed up on Panadol and cough mixture and wore a mask for the entire game today.
I started poorly and missed a few fairways on the front 9 holes, plus I rimmed about 4-5 putts. They just would not drop today! I slowly improved as the game went on, finishing with 5 pars on the back 9. They were working on the greens on the back 9. It looked as if they were trying to correct the sanding job done a few weeks ago with a drag behind the mower. They were faster for sure after the treatment. There were a few little rocks or hard dirt bits on the surface that deflected one of my putts. Bummer. No doubt a roller will be next .
Anyway I had a bad day at the office, but scored 32 points and 91 strokes. A year ago I would have been happy with 91!

xrmanParticipantI am isolating at home, keeping a low profile wearing a mask when around others. Feeling a little better yesterday I started evaluating my problem areas of my golf bag in the back yard net, using a small launch monitor.
I am comparing my cavity backed 6 iron ( 29 degrees loft) with a hollow bodied hybrid-iron ( 30 degree) to see if there is an advantage. So far the forgiveness I noted on the course of the HB Launcher has been verified.
Today I will hit the 6 iron and hybrids. I am playing around with ball position with the hybrids to see if I can get a better strike reliability. Foot spray will be used for sure.
